Any golfer knows what a distraction it can be trying to find a place to lay down, or stand up, your cigar during your rounds. A.J. Ali has seen and done a lot in his career. As a golf and wellness writer, he spent the summer of 2014 golfing in all 50 states from Florida to Hawaii and sharing his adventure with his followers on social media. As a philanthropist and entrepreneur, A.J. has raised more than $25 million for charities. The United States Air Force Veteran, TV host, writer, actor and Hollywood FAME Award winning producer can now add the title of Director to his long list of achievements, with the release of his second film as a Producer and first as a Director.

(L-R) Char Charlotte Bland, Jane Ali, A.J. Ali, Becky Lantry and Sierra Ali in Santa Monica, California
Ali, a Washington, D.C. transplant who now resides in Santa Monica, Calif., is Founder and CEO of Eclipse Sports & Entertainment (since 1999) and he has a strong history of successful media projects including his work with “The True Champion’s 30-Day Challenge,” “Wellness For Golfers,” “Good Fellas of Baltimore,” “Tee To Green: Use Golf To Make More Money, and more. But this time, he wanted to push the envelope just a little further into social consciousness.
“I wanted to do something, a short film,” Ali told the Boston Globe in an interview. “… to say, ‘Hey, look what’s happening to us,” he said. Soon, his idea evolved into a full-length documentary.
Ali, 53, coined the “L.O.V.E.” acronym to encourage people to “learn about others in their community, open their heart to them, volunteer to be part of the solution in their life, and empower others to do the same.”
Howard County is frequently cited for its affluence, quality of life, and excellent schools. And according to U.S. Census data, the county has an estimated median household income of $108,844 in 2012 and had the third-highest median household income of any U.S. county in 2013. But on that fateful day, Ali discovered another side of the area that he was totally unprepared for. The situation has resulted in this enlightening film, with Ali teaming up with Errol Webber, a Maryland Institute College of Art alumnus and cinematographer who previously worked on an Oscar-winning documentary short. The movie is directed by Ali and Webber is its director of photography. A GoFundMe page was created September 7, 2013, raising $51,287 of $50k goal.
“The film shows the ways racial profiling affects both police and the community,” said Webber, 30, to the Baltimore Sun. Their effort is a winning combination, especially with A.J. having more than 30 years experience in sports and entertainment as an athlete, artist and social entrepreneur. On the homefront, A.J. recently celebrated 23 years of marriage with his wife Jane, a caucasian woman, and together the Ali’s are on a mission to share the documentary with as many Americans as possible and to bridge the gap in police-community relations throughout America.
The movie features nearly 30 interviews with members of communities across the country including current and retired law enforcement members, along with Baltimore Police Chief Melvin T. Russell, commander of the department’s community collaboration division, and retired Los Angeles police Sgt. Cheryl Dorsey.
Also appearing in the film are community leaders, social workers and psychologists, with each giving their professional and personal opinions on how racial profiling results in tragedy and death in America, with commentary on the deaths of Freddie Gray, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Sandra Bland and the five members of law enforcement who died in a shootout in Dallas in July.
With filming completed in January 2017, the documentary is available for personal viewing on VIMEO at $9.95 for a 72-hour streaming period. It’s also available for licensing by groups. It is an excellent film for showing to youth, community groups, organizations and generating social awareness. There’s also a companion book and workshops coming in late June. Ali and Webber will continue screening the film throughout this year and next, including a June 2017 launch of a “L.O.V.E. Is the Answer,” which will host a series of screenings, workshops and Q&A’s across the country.

Congratulations to Sue Wilson who made a hole-in-one on Thursday, May 4, 2017 at Highland Creek Golf Course in Charlotte, North Carolina. The premier accomplishment happened on hole #3, at 90 yards, using a pitching wedge and Calloway golf ball.
The Davidson, North Carolina, resident has been playing golf for four years. “I was playing with a friend, Dr. Joyce Bachman….and we screamed like school kids when it rolled in the hole. It was a great feeling and I’m still on a high; I never thought of ever getting a hole-in-one, especially this early into the sport.”
Highland Creek is an 18-hole Championship course, designed by Clifton, Ezell, and Clifton. It has been rated both the best and the toughest public golf course in the Charlotte area. Particularly designed with extra care to preserve the natural beauty of the area, the course winds through towering trees and meandering creeks.
“This is my first hole-in-one,” said the elated player who is a member of The Charlotte Golfing Seniors and the Revon Ladies Golf League.
The course features Bent grass greens, Bermuda fairways, four sets of tees measuring from 5,080 to over 7,000 yards, 67 bunkers and water features on 11 holes. The neighboring community surrounding the course perimeter provides an upscale backdrop to the well-manicured course and is set well back to offer plenty of open space.
The practice facility at Highland Creek includes a driving range, 12,000 square foot putting green, chipping green, and practice bunker. The 15,000 square foot clubhouse has men’s and ladies locker rooms and a restaurant with full bar. The dining area has wonderful views of the 18th hole and surrounding lake, which always makes a great setting for hosting golf tournaments, outings and corporate events.
As an African American and professional golfer during the late 1950s and ’60s, Black has witnessed enough racism to last several lifetimes. His journey in the sport has taken him through many ‘back doors’ out yonder, over there, and other places where those of his skin’s hue were sent when unwelcomed in certain places.
Yes, he has slept in his car. too, not because he wanted to, but because hotels did not accommodate Blacks at the time. He’s also been turned away from many golf courses and refused to be let to play. What a time he has witnessed. In this candid, cordially conducted interview, Black shares almost an hour with Publishers, Debert Cook of the African American Golfer’s Digest and Aziz Gueye Adetimirin, publisher of The Network Journal during the dinner hour of a golf tournament held in his honor in Westbury, NY in 2014.

Listen closely; you can hear so much more beneath the breathy tone of his voice, as he recalls parts of his life and the wisdom that he has gained throughout the years as a pro golfer, revelations as never shared before.

On April 26, 2017, I participated in National Golf Day on Capitol Hill, in Washington, DC. It was the 10th anniversary for the occasion, but my first time participating in the event. National Golf Day is an initiative of the World Golf Foundation, created “for the industry to speak with a strong and unified voice to elected officials on issues of common concern.” This year, those common concerns were environmental issues, labor regulations, and fitness benefits.
Politics is not a particular strength of mine, but I do have a good friend and colleague in the DC area with years of experience in the political arena. He is Craig Kirby, and he was able to schedule a meeting with Congressman James Clyburn the day before National Golf Day officially launched. Congressman Clyburn is an avid golfer, and in the official press release the Congressman offered the following quote: “I look forward to National Golf Day every year. It’s a chance to visit with the folks at WE ARE GOLF here on Capitol Hill to talk about the positive impact the game has on our economy, worthy charities and personal fitness…I especially appreciate the opportunity to discuss expanding diversity throughout every aspect of the game of golf.” Craig was also able to organize and facilitate a meeting with our friend Steve Mona, a few community-based program leaders, and media journalists. The topic was how can we band together to advance the modern-day golf diversity and inclusion movement? The dialogue was frank, open and honest. It was very positive and more sessions like this are needed, in my opinion, allowing golf industry leaders to participate and better listen, see and hear the concerns of community agents who work tirelessly every day, trying valiantly to make a difference.

There seems to be a consensus that golf is progressing on matters of diversity and inclusion, albeit slow. Yet, there is still a disproportionately low percentage of female and minority participants in golf, even less of a percentage within the workforce, and almost no minority vendors taking part in the $70 billion golf industry. So what must be done to help golf reach a tipping point for diversity and inclusion? What can I do to help? I’m open to suggestions. And what will you do? Please share your comments and opinions with me.

Club will host its first USGA championship since 1954 and third overall
FAR HILLS, N.J. (May 3, 2017) – The United States Golf Association (USGA) today announced the Country Club of Detroit, in Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich., as the host site for the 66th U.S. Senior Amateur Championship. The club will host its third USGA championship, and its first since the 1954 U.S. Amateur, won by Arnold Palmer. The dates of the championship are Aug. 29-Sept. 3, 2020.
“The Country Club of Detroit and state of Michigan have always been supportive of amateur golf and the USGA is appreciative of this steadfast relationship,” said Stuart Francis, USGA Championship Committee chairman. “We are confident that a course where two U.S. Amateurs have been contested will provide a comprehensive examination as we identify the best senior amateur player.”
Founded in 1897, the Country Club of Detroit’s current course was designed by British golf architects Harry Colt and Charles Hugh Alison and opened for play in 1927. Robert Trent Jones Sr. supervised a redesign in 1952 and Robert Trent Jones Jr. followed with another redesign 44 years later. In 2011, Michigan native Tom Doak restored the course, comprised of bluegrass fairways and bentgrass greens, to its original Colt/Alison design.
The club, a 212-acre venue 12 miles north of Detroit, also features a recently renovated Tudor Revival-style clubhouse.
“The Country Club of Detroit has had a long and storied tradition in amateur golf, and it is a great honor to have been awarded the 2020 U.S. Senior Amateur Championship,” said Dainforth B. French Jr., club president. “We are excited and proud to showcase our wonderful club, which was founded more than a century ago, and a championship golf course, now restored to its original design, to a national audience.”
The U.S. Amateur Championship has been contested twice at the Country Club of Detroit. In 1915, Robert A. Gardner won the second of his two U.S. Amateur titles, defeating John G. Anderson, 5 and 4, in the final. Gardner was also a U.S. Amateur runner-up in 1916 and 1921.
Palmer defeated Robert Sweeny, 1 up, to win the 1954 U.S. Amateur. The 24-year-old Palmer birdied the 32nd and 33rd holes to go ahead for good in the match. Palmer, who later called the victory a turning point in his career, went on to win seven major professional titles, including the 1960 U.S. Open, and was the 1981 U.S. Senior Open champion.
On May 15, the Country Club of Detroit will host U.S. Open local qualifying for the third time in the last six years. Additionally, the club will host the 2018 Michigan State Amateur, the sixth time it has been contested on the course. The Michigan State Women’s Amateur has also been held there five times.
The 2020 U.S. Senior Amateur will be the 33rd USGA championship hosted in Michigan, and the third Senior Amateur. In 1984, Robert Rawlins was the champion at Birmingham Country Club, and in 1991, Bill Bosshard won at Crystal Downs Country Club, in Frankfort.
The U.S. Senior Amateur was first played in 1955. The championship for golfers age 55 and older is open to any amateur with a Handicap Index® not exceeding 7.4. This year’s U.S. Senior Amateur will be played at The Minikahda Club, in Minneapolis, Minn., from Aug. 26-31. The 2018 championship is scheduled for Aug. 25-30 at Eugene (Ore.) Country Club. In 2019, Old Chatham Golf Club, in Durham, N.C., will host from Aug. 24-29.
The USGA has also announced The Honors Course, in Ooltewah, Tenn., and The Kittansett Club, in Marion, Mass., as the host sites for the 2021 and 2022 U.S. Senior Amateur Championships, respectively. The 2021 Senior Amateur will be contested Aug. 28-Sept. 2, while the 2022 Senior Amateur will be held Aug. 27-Sept. 1.
