The Annual Georgia-Florida Golf Rider Cup was played at the 7781 yard Kinderlou golf course in Valdosta, Georgia on July 9-10, 2016. The lush, tree-lined landscape of Kinderlou Forest has today become the setting today for South Georgia’s most desirable and unique residential golf communities.
The previous five tournament Cups were won by Georgia golfers, however, this year the Florida group brought out their “big guns” to the tournament and succeeded in taking their win back to North Florida.

and Eric Moss (Valdosta resident golfer) photo credit: Al Cobb
Now aware of what they are up against, the Georgia golfers have immediately began a search for “scratch” Georgia golfers, hopefully, to help them retrieve the Cup in 2017.
At the tournament, 75-year-old Dumas Bennett of Valdosta was named as the top golfer. Dumas, ” Ben” as he is known, is a former Golf Manger at Valdosta`s Moody Air Force Base and a retired army infantryman with two combat tours in Vietnam. He was clearly the most accurate golfer on the course for two consecutive days, showcasing his skills and decades of playing experience.
The next Valdosta Rider Cup will be held in Georgia, at a date yet to be determined.
Developed by the Langdale Company, the Kinderlou golf course came about from the Kinderlou Forest that rests on a portion of several thousand acres of land which the company began acquiring in 1950. For years, the land was utilized for its timber by the fifth generation family forestry business before the idea for a luxury golf course development began to form.
The shaded streets, lined with magnificent homes, surround an 18-hole championship golf course, designed by PGA professional Davis Love III. Dedicated in April 2004, Kinderlou Forest is as much a thriving, growing community today as its namesake community, which thrived on the same lands more than 150 years ago.
Study Shows: Driving A Golf Ball After Consuming Alcohol Affects Your Game. Inspired by a University of Chicago professor’s study on stressed-out athletes, CLICKON’s creative team put an experiment together that tested the effect of alcohol on people’s golf skills.
One of the most potent killers in golf is overthinking. With over 10,000 thoughts crossing a golfer’s mind per round, it’s no wonder that they struggle to find fairways and greens in regulation.
Different levels of alcohol led to some surprising results for these three golfers…
During her study, Professor Bellock observed several adult athletes and contrasted their performance with that of an average 10-year-old. Results showed that the 10-year-old often fared much better because of an underdeveloped prefrontal cortex. This causes children to rely more on their senses than their mind.
The adults often suffered from “paralysis by analysis” syndrome where they were literally crippled by overthinking.
In a bold new content piece, CLICKON had three experienced golfers arrive at a training facility in Los Angeles where they were put through their paces. The aim was to see if – through different levels of intoxication – we could get them to return to the childlike state that makes kids play sport with greater freedom.
In the first round, each contestant hit several golf shots sober. As predicted, their distance and dispersion was consistent with their handicaps.
In round 2, we turned up the heat and gave them three shots of vodka before having them return to the testing bay. Astonishingly, all three golfers improved drastically on distance and accuracy off the tee, with one of the players gaining almost 40 yards.
Round 3 was the ultimate test. Another three shots of vodka was followed by more testing, but by this time their prefrontal cortexes hadn’t become just “underdeveloped,” they had become seriously deranged. Their distance and accuracy fell off a cliff to a level now worse than round 1.
The conclusion was that alcohol has a positive effect on a person’s golf game, but too much of it can lead to a distinct drop in performance. Alcohol literally bled the tension from our participants.

For the past 30 years, dependability and low maintenance earned the Toyota Corolla its top spot on the shopping lists of women, African Americans, Hispanics and all other Americans. Somehow, it has even made it into the garages of many who didn’t have a shopping list — the seven out of ten impulse buyers who just decided to drop in the dealership to window shop. They had no intention to buy a car that day, but drove off the lot in a new Toyota Corolla. More than 360,000 were sold in the U.S. last year, compared to 226,000 for the Chevy Cruze.
I raised a family with a Corolla Wagon back in late seventies to early eighties. it was dependable, fuel-efficient and required very little maintenance. But this is the year 2016 and the Corolla is not the same car, plus its competition has gotten tougher. Other cars in its class have introduced models that are also very dependable, and fuel efficient. Although some of its rivals offer more new features, and better performance, its hard to beat the Corolla’s legendary reputation for reliability.
The Corolla, which introduced its 11th generation in 2014, remains as fresh as ever, and continues its class leading dominance. The 2016 Toyota Corolla’s reputation remains in tact despite challenges from others in its class. I test drove a Special Edition 2016 Corolla S Plus, which has special badging, glossy 17-inch wheels, a rear spoiler, unique seats with special stitching, floor mats and red accents. A newly tuned chassis gave it a sportier performance.
Matching its sportier style, and tuned chassis, the 2016 Corolla S Plus, produces 132 horsepower from its 1.8-liter inline 4-cylinder, with a 6-speed manual transmission. The S Plus averages 28 mpg city and 37 mpg highway. Touch screen infotainment and bluetooth come standard in the S Plus; navigation is optional.
Corolla gets top score in the governments overall vehicle score, frontal and side crash. Rollover is a four rating, in a single vehicle crash. its has eight standard airbags, vehicle stability and traction control.
The 2016 Corolla is offered in four trim levels: L, LE, LE, and ECO. The base L model starts at $17,300 and goes up to $23, 300 for the LE Premium Trim package. MSRP for Special Edition Corolla S Plus I tested was $21, 595 with a additional $835 for delivery.

Petition Campaign Launched to Pressure USGA and The PGA of America to Sever Ties With Donald Trump
Golfers Opposing Bigotry, an independent group of concerned citizens, have launched an online petition campaign that seeks to pressure the United States Golf Association (USGA) and The PGA of America to sever their existing ties with Donald Trump, and to cease holding major championships at his golf properties. In addition to the stated demands, the petition urges the PGA Tour and the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) not to enter into new golf partnerships with Trump.
Oppose Golf’s Partnership with Trump.
The point of view of the petition advocates:
“Donald Trump’s hateful rhetoric and exclusionary policy proposals are divisive and dangerous. Despite professed disagreement with his abhorrent views and statements, two of American golf’s leading bodies have continued doing business with him, and as such, they reward him materially and give him and his views undeserved legitimacy.”
The petition went live for signatures on July 6, 2016, on MoveOn.org, a popular online petition website site operated by MoveOn.org Civic Action and designed to create, circulate and transmit petitions on public policy issues, policies, and legislation. The petition can be viewed and signed at http://petitions.moveon.org/sign/oppose-golfs-partnership
The petition is being widely circulated for signatures and when completed on a date yet to be determined, it is to be delivered to:
- Mike Davis, Executive Director, USGA
- Peter Bevacqua, CEO, PGA of America
- Timothy Finchem, Commissioner, PGA Tour
- Michael Whan, Commissioner, LPGA

Prominent Black Members of Golf Community Join Crusade with Martha Burk to Move U.S. Women’s Open From Trump Course
Three prominent black members of the golf community have written letters to USGA executive director Mike Davis in hopes to move 2017 U.S. Women’s Open from Donald Trump’s Trump National at Bedminster in New Jersey.
Martha Burk isn’t the only who would like to see the 2017 U.S. Women’s Open moved from Trump National Bedminster in New Jersey. New York University historian Jeffrey Sammons and two other prominent black golfers with ties to the U.S. Golf Association have written letters to its executive director, Mike Davis, renouncing their relationship with golf’s governing body for the U.S. and Mexico.
Pictured left, Martha Burke
Burk made her case in a blog for The Huffington Post on Friday, which coincides with Round 2 of this year’s Women’s Open at CordeValle, citing opposition to business magnate Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for president.
Pictured left, Jeffrey Sammons, Ph.D.
Those in golf will recognize Burk from her 2002 protest of Augusta National, in which she called on the club to end its discrimination against women. In her piece, Burk highlighted the protest of Sammons, who resigned from his volunteer role with the USGA, but he is not alone.
Calvin Sinnette, regarded as one of the leading historians of black golfers and author of Forbidden Fairways: African Americans and the Game of Golf, served on the USGA’s African-American golf history task force that created a centralized repository for artifacts and documents related to the history of blacks in golf, which is located at the USGA Museum in Far Hills, N.J. He donated much of his extensive collection of files and memorabilia to the USGA museum.

Women’s rights activist Martha Burk starts petition to move 2017 U.S. Women’s Open from Trump course
Donald Trump writes LPGA’s Whan with offer to move Women’s British Open
“The organization’s decision seems to be governed by a warped notion of fiduciary rectitude rather than a sense of moral probity. Pious pronouncements about ‘inclusion,’ ‘broader access,’ and ‘disparities,’ ring hollow when the USGA is forced to confront vexing challenges,” Sinnette wrote to Davis. “Unless the USGA changes the venue for the 2017 event and severs its relationship with a blatant racist and misogynist, I have no alternative but to relinquish my association with the organization.”
In a telephone interview, Sinnette added, “I have no faith that the USGA will do anything more than try to evade the issue.”
The third individual to write Davis was Cedrick Smith, who graduated from Hampton University in 1992 as a two-time National Minority Collegiate Golf Association All-America golfer, and was selected as a Howard Creel fellow with the USGA in 1991. Smith writes in his letter to Davis that he will be boycotting subsequent U.S. Opens (he skipped Oakmont in June after attending the previous 10 with his brother) as long as there is an affiliation with Trump.
“When racism rears its head, it has to be challenged and rebuked even when one is not a part of the group to be marginalized,” Smith wrote.
Sammons, a member of the USGA Museum and Library committee and its African-American Golf Archive dating to 2009, began expressing his concerns about the relationship between the USGA and Trump in 2011, but his efforts fell on deaf ears.

Even though the 2016 U.S. Women’s Open now underway in California won’t wrap up until late Sunday, heavy-duty protesters are already looking to the 2017 tourney.
Seems the United States Golf Association, no stranger to hypocrisy, refuses to move next year’s U.S. Women’s Open from the Trump-owned Bedminster club, even though the USGA issued a public statement condemning Trump’s racist views after his “Mexican rapist” rant when he announced his candidacy.
Shades of the Augusta National controversy back in 2003, when the USGA ignored it’s prohibition against holding events at clubs that discriminate on the basis of race or gender by standing solidly behind the Trump-like dinos holding the Master’s Tournament — even though it was clearly in violation of their own by-laws.
Golfers not being a rabble-rouser crowd, the current protest is not taking place with placards in the streets, but behind the scenes. It’s being led by New York University historian Dr. Jeffrey T. Sammons, and other prominent African American golfers. Sammons, who has been trying since 2011 to get the USGA to disassociate with Trump properties, recently resigned his membership on the USGA’s Museum and Library Committee and its African American Golf Archive in protest of the decision to leave the 2017 Women’s Open at Bedminster.
