Day 6 Diary – Rocket Classic Experience

by Kevin White Jr.

Today was another early morning, and I can confidently say my body is starting to realize this week has not been a vacation. I am exhausted, but it is the kind of tired that comes from putting in real work and being part of something meaningful. We spent the day back out on the course raking bunkers, smoothing them out, and making sure everything looked tournament ready. At this point, I think the bunker rake and I have officially become teammates.

When I first started this experience, I thought raking bunkers was pretty straightforward. Grab a rake, move some sand around, and make it look nice. I quickly learned there is a lot more to it than that. There is a proper technique, a certain way to create consistency, and a reason behind every movement. Every bunker needs to be fair and prepared the same way for every golfer, and that level of detail is something I have really come to appreciate.

Throughout the day, I continued learning more about what it takes to maintain a championship golf course. I learned more about different turfgrass varieties, including Kentucky bluegrass, and why certain grasses are selected based on climate, performance, and course conditions. I also learned more about practices like hand rolling and how it helps create smoother, healthier playing surfaces while protecting the turf. It is amazing how much science and planning goes into making a course look effortless.

One of the funniest parts of today was realizing I had been working so hard that I completely forgot to eat. My stomach was definitely trying to remind me that it was still there. By the time I finally got food, I was looking at that meal like it was the greatest thing ever created. I am pretty sure I could have eaten a full bunker rake at that point and still asked what was for dessert.

The biggest lesson I took away from today is that success is built through consistency, effort, and attention to the smallest details. The players may be the ones everyone watches on tournament day, but there is an entire team behind the scenes making sure everything is ready before the first swing happens. Seeing the pride everyone takes in their work has shown me the importance of having a strong work ethic and taking ownership of whatever task is in front of you.

Even though my body is tired and my arms are probably wondering why I put them through this much raking, I am leaving today feeling grateful and accomplished. This experience has taught me so much about golf course management, teamwork, discipline, and the people who make events like this possible. I came here ready to learn, but I am leaving with memories, new relationships, and lessons that I will carry with me for a long time. Another great day in the books, and I would say the bunker rake and I are officially undefeated.
