Ugandan professional golfer Ronald Rugumayo produced a dramatic final-round comeback to capture the 2026 Uganda Professional Open, September 2–5, 2026, at Uganda Golf Club in Kitante, adding another significant chapter to his career and giving home fans a memorable championship finish.
Rugumayo entered the final round in sixth place, two shots behind overnight leader Godwin Okoko. The position was a far cry from where Rugumayo had stood earlier in the championship. He opened the tournament with an impressive 3-under-par 69, taking the outright lead after the first round.
He followed with a 2-under-par 70 in the second round, keeping himself firmly in contention. However, a 2-over-par 74 during Friday’s third round dropped him back to 213 and appeared to put the title within reach of other contenders.
Okoko capitalized on the opportunity, shooting a superb 5-under-par 67 to take control of the tournament heading into the final round.
Rather than allowing the setback to derail him, Rugumayo responded with the type of performance that defines championship golf. Starting six places behind the leader, he mounted a determined charge and ultimately completed the comeback to claim the Uganda Professional Open title.
The victory is particularly significant for Ugandan golf because the Professional Open provides an important platform for the country’s leading professionals to compete for national honors while showcasing the depth of talent developing within East African golf.
Rugumayo’s performance also adds to an encouraging period for golf across the region. From professional tournaments to growing junior and amateur programs, East African golfers continue to make their presence felt on the international stage. His victory comes at a time when Uganda’s golf community is working to expand participation and develop more competitive opportunities for local players. Uganda Golf Club, one of the country’s most prominent golf facilities, once again provided the setting for a championship that tested players over multiple rounds.
For Rugumayo, the tournament demonstrated the importance of staying patient when a championship begins to slip away. After leading early, falling back and entering the final round in sixth place, he had every reason to believe the opportunity had passed. Instead, he turned the final round into a statement.
The 2026 Uganda Professional Open will be remembered not simply for the final result, but for Rugumayo’s ability to recover from adversity and produce when the championship was on the line.
