Through the influence of a very good friend Robert B. Barnes was introduced to the game of golf. That good friend just so happened to be PGA Professional Paul E. Blockoms. Barnes had expressed an interest in learning more about the game and Blockoms, a refined golf coach and educator, was more than willing to help him. After a few rounds and guided lessons, the Chicago-born Barnes was hooked.
Barnes resides in the Northern Chicago suburb of Forest Park. The district sits along the shore of Lake Michigan, where its 14,213 residents are well aware of their area’s ever-changing weather patterns and short golf season. But despite this Barnes carries a 13 handicap and manages to play almost every weekend—April through October, if he’s lucky.
Peace of Mind, While Strengthening the Body
“Golf has proven to be a relaxing—but yet a challenging activity for me, in more ways than one,” says the 53-year-old, 6’1” golfer whose wife Kimberly is a vigilant spectator of the game. Motivated by knowing that he is playing at his best, but can always play better, is what keeps Barnes coming back for more,
“The ability to build relationships—both personal and business—is also key. But over the last couple of years, I’ve found that being able to play an occasional game with my two daughters, Jillian (18) and Jenna (13), is in a word, priceless.”
Barnes has been a member of the Two Seaters Golf Club Foundation for over eight years. The 501c3 organization has a membership made up men and women from three Chapters that include Chicago, Tennessee, and Southern California. Within its ranks Barnes has worn several hats including Tournament Director (4 years), Vice Chairman of the Board, and he currently serves as New Members Chairman and Club Vice President.
The Two Seaters Golf Club engages its members with a host of activities and it was Barnes who orchestrated the organization’s weekend travel for 4 years, building strong golfing relationships all along the way. Barnes also spearheaded the group’s very popular Annual Club Picnic, creating a great way for members to socialize away from the golf course. All of these programs, says Barnes, “gave me great pleasure, as they all brought me closer to the wonderful game of golf!
It’s All About the Friendships
Barnes loves playing rounds with his “Dots Crew,” a group of golfing buddies that includes Al Christian (AC), Cardell Gentry (Sgt. Major) and Keith Lafayette (Kapone). They’ll sometimes all head over to Barne’s home course, University Golf Club, for a little action, smiling and joking all the way there.
University Golf Club is a paradise of greens and boasts 18 championship holes and welcomes players from all walks of life. It was designed by acclaimed course architect Lawrence Packard and updated in 2004 by Greg Martin. The new clubhouse spans a magnificent 7,000 square feet and it is professionally managed and staffed by PGA of America Golf Professionals. While there, the Dot’s Crew group enters a totally different world, where focus and skill can make the difference between winning and losing. But whatever the outcome, the golfing budding have experienced many glorious rounds at there.
Barnes, who specializes in grilling good-tasting BBQ, has earned the moniker “GRILL MASTER!” And he hopes to one day open a restaurant called none other than, Robz Ribz! His most admired golfer is “Freddie Couples because he has a swing that can be duplicated by average golfers.”
Throughout his early years, Barnes had a knack for working with numbers, paying close attention to detail, and the fulfillment of checks and balances. He holds a degree in Business Administration from National Louis University, where his strong skills and ability led him to a career that now spans over 20-years, as Owner/Accountant at his firm RB Accounting Services (Park Forest, IL).

Keeping Up Appearances!
“Just the interest and energy that we all have for the game makes me proud,” states a wide smiling Barnes who sports a nice, low, clean-cut hairstyle, rippled with natural waves– in a President Obama type of way!
He candidly admits, “I enjoy looking fly in my golf attire, as well!”
Not only does Barnes look captivating while playing, but he has also captured a few tournament wins: claiming the Two Seaters Golf Club Foundation’s 2015 Invitational (B Flight, 1st Place) and the 2015 D.U.C Hookers 42nd Annual Tournament.
“I’m not an overachiever, but I pride myself in playing a little bit better each time I play. I guess you could say I challenge myself to be better with each stroke.”
HWV Enterprises, LLC, closed the deal on April 10, 2015 bringing to fruition The Marlton Golf Club. Their grand opening was held September 14-20, 2015.
Located in the Marlton Community in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, the Par 71- course has a rating of 69.8, and 123 slope. In fact, it was the first public course in Prince George’s County. It sits just a 20-minutes outside of Washington, DC, and 45-minutes from Baltimore.

Harlem’s Rattlers and the Great War: The Undaunted 369th Regiment and the African American Quest for Equality (Modern War Studies)
When on May 15, 1918 a French lieutenant warned Henry Johnson of the 369th to move back because of a possible enemy raid, Johnson reportedly replied: “I’m an American, and I never retreat.” The story, even if apocryphal, captures the mythic status of the Harlem Rattlers, the African-American combat unit that grew out of the 15th New York National Guard, who were said to have never lost a man to capture or a foot of ground that had been taken. It also, in its insistence on American identity, points to a truth at the heart of this book—more than fighting to make the world safe for democracy, the black men of the 369th fought to convince America to live up to its democratic promise. It is this aspect of the storied regiment’s history—its place within the larger movement of African Americans for full citizenship in the face of virulent racism—that Harlem’s Rattlers and the Great War brings to the fore.
With sweeping vision, historical precision, and unparalleled research, this book will stand as the definitive study of the 369th. Though discussed in numerous histories and featured in popular culture (most famously the film Stormy Weather and the novel Jazz), the 369th has become more a matter of mythology than grounded, factually accurate history—a situation that authors Jeffrey T. Sammons and John H. Morrow, Jr. set out to right. Their book—which eschews the regiment’s famous nickname, the “Harlem Hellfighters,” a name never embraced by the unit itself—tells the full story of the self-proclaimed Harlem Rattlers. Combining the “fighting focus” of military history with the insights of social commentary, Harlem’s Rattlers and the Great War reveals the centrality of military service and war to the quest for equality as it details the origins, evolution, combat exploits, and postwar struggles of the 369th.
The authors take up the internal dynamics of the regiment as well as external pressures, paying particular attention to the environment created by the presence of both black and white officers in the unit. They also explore the role of women—in particular, the Women’s Auxiliary of the 369th—as partners in the struggle for full citizenship. From its beginnings in the 15th New York National Guard through its training in the explosive atmosphere in the South, its singular performance in the French army during World War I, and the pathos of postwar adjustment—this book reveals as never before the details of the Harlem Rattlers’ experience, the poignant history of some of its heroes, its place in the story of both World War I and the African American campaign for equality—and its full importance in our understanding of American history.
Jeffrey T. Sammons, Ph.D. is a Professor of History at New York University, the author of Harlem’s Rattlers and the Great War: The Undaunted 369th Regiment and the African American Quest for Equality and is currently writing a book on race and golf. He is a former member of the United States Golf Association’s Museum and Library Committee, and was a founding member of the African American Golf Archive. He currently serves on the board of the Clearview Legacy Foundation.

Lloyd J. Duggan Jr. was born in Brooklyn, New York, the most populous borough of New York City and the heartbeat of fast-paced urban American life. But nowadays, the ambitious professional enjoys a more serene lifestyle as a resident in beautiful Middletown, Connecticut.
While in college—and to make ends meet, Duggan worked at the historic Langston Golf Course in Washington, D.C., but he did not play golf then. It was not until he took a job in the marketing department of Yankee Gas (now Eversource Energy) that the sport really attracted his attention.
“I noticed that during the spring and summer, I would be the only one in the office, because all the others were out playing in golf tournaments—It was like, DUH?”
After this realization, it did not take Duggan long to get into the swing of things and get fully involved with the game. Today, the fit 5’9”, 60-year-old gentleman carries a USGA handicap of 21 and he has been a member of the One Putt Golf Tour since 2012.
When he’s not out on the golf course, or playing in corporate tournaments, or in rounds with club members, the married father of three enjoys spending his quiet time writing. His wife of 35-years, Gerri, does not play golf but she is a huge supporter of her husband’s beloved past time.

Duggan spent his years well while living in Washington, D.C., earning a BBA in Marketing from Howard University and an MBA in Marketing from American University. While working as a marketing consultant, blogger, and entrepreneur, he wisely parlayed his knowledge and experience into a very profitable business venture and, for the last nine years, he has served as President/CEO at his firm GL Market Research. The full-service, Connecticut-based market research and marketing consulting firm helps its clients to make better business decisions while maintaining the highest standards of ethics and integrity.
When he is not working long hours doing research, entertaining clients, developing content, or brand management, you can find Duggan teeing-up on a golf course about 2-3 times per week.
His home course, Indian Springs G.C. in Middlefield (CT) is a challenging 9-hole, par 36 public golf course, located in the heart of central Connecticut. It features a great variety of holes with hills, water, incredible views, and impeccable fairways. The course is nearby his residence and it makes a perfect practice facility for Duggan.
Duggan took lessons with golf professional Kevin Giancola in the late 90’s, and says that it was the benefit of watching his golf swing on actual video that really helped to put things in perspective for him.
“The first video of my swing showed me coming over the top; and I’ve used that ever since to correct my slice—Doesn’t always work though.”
Regarding his golf game: “It’s like a box of chocolates, says Duggan, who is always in continuous pursuit of perfection. “I never know what score I’m going to get.”
“Trying to get that little white ball to do what I want it to do,” is still my biggest challenge, says Duggan who admires golfer Tiger Woods because, “he never quits.”

(by Emily Kay)–Tiger Woods’ first U.S. course design in Houston opened recently to acclaim, and Tiger’s one-time pal and golf junkie Michael Jordan is no doubt excited to give the track a twirl. If he does tee it up on Tiger’s new turf, the NBA legend and Ryder Cup enthusiast need not worry about those cargo shorts that had the Miami country club set in such a dither a couple years back.
That’s because there’s no dress code at Bluejack National.
“There is a relaxed feel,” famed golf instructor Dave Stockton Jr. told Golf Digest. “If you want to wear jeans, fine. You want to wear your shirt untucked, fine.”
Seriously, who could forget the tizzy Tiger sent the fashion police into when he played his first U.S. Open practice round at Philadelphia’s Merion Golf Club in 2013 — with skinny legs protruding from his own pair of MJ-like cargo shorts?
Perhaps with such incidents in mind, Woods has created a ritzy-ditzy private golf club where the rich and famous may roam their natural habitat clad in couture — like jeans and shorts with (wait for it) pockets on the outside!

(By John Perry) Yankee Stadium is not the only place in the Bronx (NY) that is loaded with history of days gone by. The borough’s ageless Van Cortlandt Park Golf Course has it’s share of prominence also.
First of all, Van Cortlandt Park Golf Course is the oldest public golf course, not just in New York State, but in the entire United States. The course opened on July 6th, 1895 in a time when Glover Cleveland was president; the first professional American football game is played, in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, between the Latrobe YMCA and the Jeannette Athletic Club (Latrobe wins 12-0), and that same year, W. E. B. Du Bois became the first African American to receive a Ph.D. from Harvard University. It was also the year that Frederick Douglass, African American rights activist and former slave, died .
Originally Van Courtlandt golf course was a 2,561 yard nine hole layout that cost $624.80. T. McClure constructed the course that was later expanded by Scottish golf course designer Tom Bendelow from a 55 acre, 9 hole course to a 120 acre, 18 hole course. Bendelow also designed East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga., with noted Architect Donald Ross.

Photo: (l-r) Van Cortland Golf Course Head Pro Paul Sliva with Isaiah Thompson, a recent graduate of Mommouth University in South Jersey, (Law Major). Previously, Thompson was the first Captain of the John Shippen Youth Golf Academy in Scotch Plains, N.J.
As the General Manager at Van Cortlandt G.C. Christopher Ryan is the nicest guy you could ever want to meet.
The course’s Head Pro Paul Sliva is a native New Yorker who grew up not far from the course. Silva is a very engaging gentleman, with a wonderful personality. In catting with him, I discovered that he once played on The Hogan Tour (now the Web.Com Tour) back in the day. Silva also taught a youth clinic with Jack Nicklaus for the Royal Bank Of Scotland. The clinic was Silva’s personal fundraiser, designed to raise money for the Veterans Hospital in Montrose, N. Y., an annual event, which he is very proud of.
Lights, Camera, Action!
There have been a couple of notable T.V. series and movies filmed at Van Cortlandt G.C., such as “Boardwalk” “Empire” and the 1987 movie “Wall Street”, starring Michael Douglas. As a matter of fact, the 18th hole at Van Cortlandt is named “Wall Street”. The course also has holes named “Broadway”, “The Babe”, “Sugar Ray”, “Willie Mays”, “Joe Louis”, and “Larry, Curly, & Moe” after the Three Stooges. photo: Professional golfer Jim Barnes, “Long Jim”, taken in 1916 at Van Cortlandt G.C.
Look Who’s Played Here
The course has seen a swath of famous faces. Among just a few of the celebrities who have frequented Van Cortlandt is: Jackie Robinson, Yoga Berra, Mayor Rudy Giuliani and a host of others.
Photo: Maritza-Rodriquez, Manager of Food & Beverage welcomes all guests with her beautiful smile.
Of significance, the course still maintains the original wooden lockers that many of the celebrities occupied whenever they played there. Going inside the old locker room was like stepping into a time capsule.
Getting There
The good thing about Van Cortlandt is that you can easily get there by New York subway. The #1 train lets you off only 5 minutes away from the course. I personally think that the course is one of the best kept secrets in the Bronx. I’ve played Augusta National and many other exclusive, pristine, and prestigious golf courses, and I still will argue that Van Cortlandt Park Golf Course is just as historical as any out there. For driving directions see the bottom of this article.
The Innisfail Golf Club plays there regularly and have been doing so for 30 years now. The greens on the course are bent grass and poa and overall, the course is in pretty good shape.
For the $33.00 green fee you can’t go wrong. Add in the fact that the St. Andrews Golf Club hosted the country’s first public golf tournament at Van Cortlandt in 1896, and you know that the course is something very special.
The clubhouse was completed in 1902, by owners Frank Richards and Michael Tafet. The American Golf Corporation, which manages over 300 golfing facilities throughout the country has been operating Van Cortlandt since 1992. Legendary golfers such as Harry Vardon, Walter Hagen, and Jim Barnes, have played and competed on these very sacred grounds.
Nickname: “Vanny”
Being the grandfather of golf courses, Van Cortlandt has earned the nickname ” Vanny “, from locals in the New York area.
I was fortunate enough to play Van Cortlandt on a cloudy Thursday in November with scattered showers, but still, had an enjoyable 18 holes of golf.
The 19th hole experience, hosted by Maritza Rodriguez, was equally satisfying. Maritza is the Food & Beverage Manager, Steve King is the Director and “Matt”, serves as the Pro Shop attendant…three more wonderful people at the course.
My playing partner Rasar Thompson and his son Isaiah, enjoyed the delicious grilled chicken, while I settled for a basic cheeseburger and fries platter that was second to none. A cold Stella Altoise beer washed it all down for a great ending to a great day at Van Cortlandt.
During the meal Maritza informed us that the course had just hosted a Jewish Barmitzvah the week prior, for 200 people. The event took place out on “The Turn”, another name for their “Patio”. From the photos she shared, the Van Cortlandt catered affair looked impressive, to say the least.
I’m a big fan of The Golf Channel, I watch it religiously, 7 days a week, particularly Morning Drive, which usually Aires from 7:00am – 9:00am. On Wednesday, Oct. 28th, Matt Ginella, a Golf Channel Travel Guru, gave a list of his top five must play courses in New York. Ordinarily I love Matt’s golf course tips and recommendations, but on this particular morning he listed these choices:
(1) Bethpage Black – Long Island – $130.00
(2) Bethpage Red – Long Island – $96.00
(3) Harbour Pointe Golf Club – Port Washington, N. Y. – $90-$120.00
(4) Ballyowen – Hamburg, N. J. – $100.00
(5) Trumps Golf Links – Ferry Point, Bronx, N. Y. – $180.00
Now I know that Van Cortlandt Park Golf Course might be considered a Division III golf course compared to those he mentioned, but to go ALL the way over to New Jersey and list Ballyowen, when you’ve got the historical Van Cortlandt G.C. right in the heart of New York….Well, that was a slight oversight. Matt, I love you buddy, but I think you dropped the ball on that one.
Also I know that Van Cortlandt doesn’t have a driving range or putting green, but personally, I think that’s also part of their charm. In essence, it says, come here ready to “play” golf, not “practice” golf.
I can only put it this way, when you’re a driver and a 3-wood away from Yankee Stadium, THE Bronx Zoo, Fordham University, and the George Washington Bridge, you can get a away with it. Van Cortlandt Golf Course is an old-style course, in the middle of the Bronx. Whata you expect?
If you get the chance go there, play it, listen to the sounds of the city, enjoy it. No, it’s not gonna be the same as playing Peeble Beach, but remember, you’re in The Bronx, so don’t get it twisted.
