FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TEE OFF NATIONAL BLACK GOLF MONTH
ON THE AFRICAN AMERICAN GOLF TRAIL
Play and Support African American Owned,
Operated & Managed Courses in Time for the 2014 Golf Season
NEW YORK, N.Y., April 11, 2014 – With the onset of golfers awakening from the long winter freeze and in conjunction with April as National Black Golf Month the debut of playing the African American Golf Trail is proudly announced.
The African American Golf Trail is comprised of 8 African American owned, operated and/or managed golf courses spread across the U.S. The Trail’s concept, presented by the African American Golfer’s Digest, the nation’s leading publication of avid black golfers, is designed to build golfer camaraderie while growing rounds played at the courses. A thrilling aspect of the Trail is the Trail CHALLENGE which is also announced and gives golfers a goal to shoot for in both playing and supporting the courses.
To drive excitement, golfers are invited to play the African American Golf Trail CHALLENGE, playing on their own schedule at least one round at each of the 8 courses over the period of 16 months (Jan. 1, 2014-June 30, 2015). Golfers who are interested in participating in the CHALLENGE are asked to book their own tee times with the courses, then, submit copies of their 8 scorecards, all at one time, to the African American Golfer’s Digest. In return, golfers will earn a beautiful “Certificate of Play” that they can display for years to come in their home or office.
“If someone has already played on one of these magnificent courses, this year, they already have a head start on the CHALLENGE! I’ve checked in with each of the courses on our list and the owners and managers are excited to learn about the Trail CHALLENGE. They are ready for a record-breaking season and looking forward to providing all of their golfing guests with the very best in first-class hospitality,” says Debert Cook, publisher of the 11-year-old quarterly magazine that plans to hold an annual Trail Classic at one of the courses later this year.
Announcing this remarkable list of golf courses and the special playing CHALLENGE is something that has been in the works for more than a year by the publication. Now, as golfers pull out their gear, and begin playing rounds with friends and at tournaments, this is a great opportunity to include a visit to one, or all, of these great golf courses on the list.
Courses on the List for the
African American Golf Trail include:
- Bull Creek Golf & Country Club Louisburg, NC
- Clearview Golf Course
East Canton, OH - College Park Golf
College Park, GA - Freeway Golf Course
Sicklerville, NJ - Innisbrook Golf Course
Palm Harbor, FL - Langston Golf Course
Washington, D.C., a Department
of Interior/ National Park Service facility - Sugar Creek Golf & Tennis
Atlanta, GA - Woodridge Golf Club
Mineral Wells, WV
“We’re proud and excited to be a part of this Trail and I hope that people will take advantage of this, because it’s great. Last year was not a very good year for our course, but we are getting off to a good start now, and looking forward to meeting visitors,” says Grace Davis, manager at College Park Golf in College Park, GA. The well maintained greens at the 9-hole course are prefect for youth, ladies, executives and those with limited time for play. For travelers, the course is just 5-6 minutes from the Atlanta airport.
“I’ve played several courses on this Trail and the signature line-up experience is sure to please golfers of all levels,” says Jim Beatty, a member of the Editorial Advisory Board for the African American Golfer’s Digest. “As president of my own firm, NCS International (Omaha, NE), when spending precious time away from the office, it is important for me to enjoy myself while also doing something healthy and supportive for the golfing community. We all need each other and the African American Golf Trail CHALLENGE is a great way to show support.”
To participate in the CHALLENGE golfers only need to grab their calendars and telephones to begin making tee-time arrangements at the various courses. The Trail is also great for planning a concierge-style couples’ retreat, group outing, girlfriends, or guy-friends get-away across these 8 fabulous destinations.

AFRICAN AMERICAN GOLFER’S DIGEST CAMEO APPEARANCE in “BAGGAGE CLAIM” MOVIE
AFRICAN AMERICAN GOLFER’S DIGEST
MAKES CAMEO APPEARANCE IN NATIONALLY RELEASED MOVIE, BAGGAGE CLAIM
An American Comedy Film Directed By
Award-Winning Writer, Director, Producer, Author,
David E. Talbert Showcases Black Golf Magazine
New York, NY (September 27, 2013)— Award-winning writer, director, producer, author, David E. Talbert released the film BAGGAGE CLAIM in theaters on September 27, 2013 to an anxiously awaiting national audience. BAGGAGE CLAIM boasts an A-List cast, including Paula Patton, Derek Luke, Taye Diggs, Jill Scott, Adam Brody, Trey Songz, Tia Mowry, LaLa Anthony, Lauren London, Rickey Smiley, Nephew Tommy, Boris Kodjoe and 2-time Academy Award nominee Djimon Hounsou.
Paula Patton is one of the many great actresses who lights up the screen of this exciting film, a 2013 American comedy film directed by David E. Talbert and written by Talbert based on his book of the same name, BAGGAGE CLAIM is full of great comedy and actors who serve the film well.
Patton, the central figure, plays a 30-year old flight attendant who’s becoming increasingly restless about the fact that she can’t ever seem to meet “Mr. Right”. Each scene is gracelessly conceived and executed.
During the beginning of the film, as the opening credits are rolling, the cover image of the particularly slick, glossy, 10-year old publication, theAfrican American Golfer’s Digest is shown, being folded and put into the overhead section of the airplane. It’s debut appearance is definitely in the right place at the right time, as directors over at Sneak Preview Productions wanted to utilize a magazine they say would “…show a real publication that Black businessman would be reading on an airplane, outside of the standard regulars usually protrayed: Black Enterprise, EBONY, and Jet.

The African American Golfer’s Digest, a PGA of America Diverse Supplier, is the nations leading print publication and online portal for avid Black golfers. The national quarterly is celebrating 10-years of success by its Publisher, Debert Cook, CMP, who says, “This cinametic exposure for the African American Golfer’s Digest dipicts just how significant our coverage of minorities in the sport and lifestyle of the game of golf truly is. We are the only golf magazine that highlights the faces and profiles of individuals who are extraordinary in the game, but who will never be given the opportunity to be seen or recognized in mainstream golf publications.”
“I applaude Mr. Talbert for including the African American Golfer’s Digest in his wonderous movie. His reputation is indisputable in the industry. I know, that even the few seconds that the cover of the magazine’s image is shown on the large movie screens across America, this visual will make even more blacks consider participating in golf, and to bringing their children into this game where so many opportunities abound for scholarships,” says Ms. Cook (pictured above) who is a certified meetings planner by trade, organizing and managing corporate programs and community events with her firm Event Planners Plus NA Inc., prior to launching the magazine. A former adjunct history professor at the College of New Rochelle, she has been playing the game for over 12-years.
Talbert (Directed by, Screenplay by, Produced by) is a multiple award-winning playwright, novelist and filmmaker. His latest film, BAGGAGE CLAIM, marks the first time an African American has written and directed a film that was adapted from his own novel. More film information can be found at BaggageClaimMovie.com
Talbert has written and directed 14 nationally acclaimed touring productions that have garnered an unprecedented 24 NAACP Image Award nominations, and won Best Playwright of the Year in 2005 for his play The Fabric of a Man. In 2007, Talbert, (pictured left) received the New York Literary Award for Best Playwright of the Year for Love in the Nick of Tyme and in 2008 he received the prestigious NAACP Trailblazer Award for his groundbreaking accomplishments in theater. In addition to being one of the most produced playwrights in American theatre, in 2008 Talbert wrote, directed, and produced the Sony Pictures comedy FIRST SUNDAY, starring Ice Cube, Katt Williams, and Tracey Morgan. Talbert is a graduate of Morgan State University where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing and later attended New York University’s accelerated film program.
“We’re watching history in the making” says Talbert. “I’m honored to be a part of it.”

Publisher of African American Golfer’s Digest Joins Harlem Tourist Board Advisory Committee
March 1, 2013—HARLEM (NY) — Landmarks of Harlem’s cultural legacy dot its streets — the Apollo Theatre, the Cotton Club, the Lennox Lounge — and now a newly formed official group of representatives hope to boost the iconic neighborhood as an international destination.
The recently-established Harlem Tourism Board launched the “Our Harlem, Your Harlem” campaign on this week to coordinate between the neighborhood’s various businesses and promote them to the world.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for all of New York, the U.S. and the world at large, says Publisher, Debert Cook, CMP,” one of the newest members of the Board’s Advisory Committee. “No where else in the world will you find such a mix of eclectic history that propels through these streets to serve as a civil rights book of challenges and progress. There’s a rapid change of landscape happening in Harlem and local residents must continue to be an active part of it.”
The group, largely made up of local business leaders, hopes to start tourism initiatives including establishing neighborhood-wide business promotions, creating special tours and erecting information centers, among other things. The ultimate goal is to draw local businesses closer together in the hopes that they may all grow more profitable together.
“Harlem has a wealth of historical landmarks and interesting attractions to draw in visitors,” said Eugenia Foxworth, the board’s vice president and local real estate executive. “Our campaign will ensure that Harlem attractions get the attention they deserve.”
“Harlem is an international community,” said Debbie Kops, board member and owner of a local tour company.” “There is room for everyone. Come visit.”

October 2012 (NY) When it comes to knowing the hearts and thoughts of African American golfers JET MAGAZINE sought out an expert, Debert Cook, publisher of the African American Golfer’s Digest. Cook was asked for her comments on the recent state of affairs surrounding the decision of August National Golf Club to admit women among its membership.
“As I pointed out, there has been tremendous progress in the ranks of golf organizations, however, there still remains a lot more to be done,” stated Ms. Cook, publisher of the 9-year-old, quarterly magazine that is recognized by the PGA of America as a Diverse Supplier.
“For too long, Black women, Black men and other minorities have been denied in joining prominent golfing organizations. Today, this move by Augusta National Golf Club to admit women among its membership is a grand showing of progress along these lines. It shows a new mind-set among the organization. Where there is a presence of Blacks, and other minorities, there is an opportunity to bring change among one’s consitutents. It is good to see Augusta National Golf Club offer this olive branch.”
