Greenwood GOLF Charities Launches Fundraising Initiative to Support the Next Generation of Golfers

Charlotte, NC – March 12, 2025 – Greenwood GOLF Charities, a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to promoting diversity, inclusion, and accessibility in the game of golf, is excited to announce a new fundraising initiative aimed at supporting the next generation of golfers.

This groundbreaking initiative invites golf enthusiasts, professionals, and supporters of the sport to donate the value of just one round of golf per year to help build a sustainable future for young athletes, particularly junior golfers and golf programs at HBCUs. The first year funds raised will directly benefit the JCSU Golf Team and provide critical resources to junior golfers such as access to country club, new equipment, and opportunities for competitive golf experiences.

Excel Youth Academy Making a Difference in Golf and Education

Rachelle Lovett Houston has dedicated her life to making golf more accessible to underserved youth through her organization, Excel Youth Academy (EYA). Based in Lawrenceville, Georgia, Houston’s journey with golf began through her grandfather, John A. Lovett, the first Black man to own a golf course (Selma Golf Center) in Selma, Alabama. His pioneering work in the sport influenced her passion and commitment to fostering inclusivity in golf.

Through Excel Youth Academy, founded in April 2017, Houston has worked tirelessly to provide opportunities for young people to learn golf while integrating STEAM education, art, and culinary arts into the program. “Golf is not just a sport—it’s a tool for teaching life skills, discipline, and critical thinking,” Houston said. Her mission is to bridge the gap between sports and education, ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder participation.

EYA collaborates with organizations such as First Tee, Jr. PGA, US Kids Golf, and WE ARE GOLF to expand access to the game. Through social media outreach, school partnerships, and community events, the academy has introduced over 2,000 young people to the sport. “We make sure kids from all backgrounds have a chance to experience golf and learn valuable life lessons along the way,” Houston explained.

One of Houston’s biggest challenges is finding time to focus on her own golf game. “We are constantly hosting clinics, tournaments, and exposure events for youth, so I rarely get to practice myself,” she admitted. To overcome this, she is working on scheduling dedicated practice time and playing rounds with students. Her last recorded golf handicap was 17, reflecting her ongoing engagement with the sport despite her packed schedule.

Houston graduated from Jackson State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Communication and a minor in Marketing. She is a certified U.S. Kids Coach and a recipient of the Pinnacle Leadership Award from the Fortitude Educational and Cultural Development Center (FECDC). She served for two years as President of the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP). In recognition of her contributions through Excel Youth Academy since 2017, she received an official proclamation from the Georgia State Legislature for the organization’s impactful community work.

Excel Youth Academy remains funded through grants, sponsorships, and fundraising efforts, including the 9 & Dine Charity Golf Tournament. The WE ARE GOLF Foundation has been a crucial supporter, awarding EYA $10,000 in grant funding in both 2022 and 2024. Houston is grateful for the continued financial backing, stating, “These grants have allowed us to expand our programs and serve even more students.”

PGA Ghana Captain Readies For 3rd Annual Tournament at Achimota Golf Club

The Nation of Ghana’s premier Achimota Golf Club in Accra, Ghana, will be the venue for the 50 professional golfers from various golf clubs throughout the country will converge on March 12th for the third edition of the PGA Captain’s Prize Tournament. it will be the first time that the country’s premier golf club will be hosting this very particular championship which is staged to honor the Captain of the PGA for his contributions.

The current captain of the PGA Ghana, John “Wonders” Malwuli, indicated that preparations have begun to insure a successful 3-day golf competition which will end on March 14. Highlights From The 2025 Arnold Palmer Invitational

Date: Mar 6 – 9, 2025

Third round tournament leader Collin Morikawa birdied the final hole on Saturday to break a 3-way tie at -9 to take a 1 shot lead into tomorrow’s round 4 at -10.

Day 4 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational began with world number 2 golfer Xander Schauffele going off as a single, for the 9:15 tee time.  Final pairing consisted of Collin Morikawa and Russell Henley going off at 1:45 pm.

To start the final round like he ended the 3rd round, Collin birdied the very 1st hole, to move to -11 and a 3-shot lead heading to number 2.  And from that point up until hole number 16, Morikawa held the lead in the tournament. 

Henley’s unlikely chip in for eagle on the par 5 16th was definitely the game changer, with Morikawa making par on the hole.  That generated a 2-shot swing heading to the par 3 17th.  Both golfers just finished the last two holes with pars. 

Needless to say Russell Henley played with the lead for two holes during the final round, but that was good enough to secure a win and his first Arnold Palmer Invitational victory. 

The Arnold Palmer Invitational was the fourth of eight signature events on the PGA Tour calendar. It offered a $20-million purse with $4 million going to the winner, Russell Henley. Congratulations to Russell Henley on a tournament well played.

Willie L. Simmons Jr., Esteemed AAGD Board Member Passes Away

“I am deeply heartbroken to share the passing of our esteemed Editorial Advisory Board Member, Mr. Willie L. Simmons Jr., of Sacramento, California, who passed away on March 8. His daughter, Lorreta Simmons, delivered the sad news to me today,” said African American Golfer’s Digest Publisher, Debert Cook.

Mr. Simmons, age 94, was a dedicated member of the African American Golfer’s Digest (AAGD), joining the AAGD Editorial Advisory Board in 2007. His invaluable guidance and commitment helped expand the publication’s reach nationwide, with a special focus on Sacramento, California.

He traveled extensively on behalf of the magazine, championing diversity in golf and advancing our publication’s mission in locations such as Branson, Missouri; Northern Virginia; Montego Bay, Jamaica; Southern Michigan; Hot Springs, Virginia; and Miami, Florida. Simmons enjoyed writing, photographing, and networking with industry experts and colleagues, while documenting golf events and attended golf expositions.

Beyond his contributions to AAGD, Mr. Simmons made a lasting impact on the golfing community through his work with youth. In July 1990, he founded the Northern California Minority Junior Golf Association in Sacramento, serving as President of the nonprofit organization and the whole Simmons family was actively involved in one aspect or another in the corporation that worked to enrich the lives of underprivileged and at-risk youth. Mr. Simmons‘ efforts provided positive social experiences that fostered character development, academic achievement, and exposure to the game of golf.

Through training programs, instructional camps, scholarships, tournaments, and charity events, Mr. Simmons opened doors of opportunity for thousands of young people. NCMJGSA’s junior golf programs have been recognized as one of the top youth and educational junior golf training programs funded by the PGA, Northern California Golf Association (NCGA) and USGA Foundations. In 2024, the organization held its 31st Annual Sacramento River City Golf Classic Fundraiser.

During his 90th birthday celebration, in 2020, Simmons shared that he was born in August 1934, and raised in the hoods of West Monroe, LA and later relocated to Oakland, CA, where he was a member of the McClymonds High School (Oakland CA/Class of June 1948). “I had been caddying at McGuire Golf & Country Club for two years in West Monroe, Louisiana, that I could not play on,” said Simmons to this publication during his 90th birthday celebration interview. Over the years, Simmons went on to hold memberships in the Sacramento Area Black Golf Club and the Western States Golf Association.

Simmons was Federally employed for 36 years by the Department of Defense, as an Army and US Air Force Civilian. “I retired in January 1986 as a US Federal Civil Servant, General Superintendent of Electronics. I was in a position that required me to travel worldwide, enabling me to play golf in Spain, the Philippines, Hawaii, and much of the continental United States,” said the father of four daughters and one son during his 90th birthday celebration interview with AAGD. In 2016 Simmons and his lovely wife, Pauline, celebrated 62-years of marriage and were recognized in the Observer Newspapers. The former professional musician led his own group for more than 25 years which explains his passion for listening to 1960s-70s modern jazz.

Simmons was on active duty in the US Army for two years (1951-1953) and was assigned to Germany. Simmons recounted that he was very proud of two things while being there: To be a part of a basketball team that had 54 wins and 4 losses and won the last 44 games in a row (US European Military Champions). He also was able to be coached by the same coach and run on the same track that Jesse Owens accomplished his heroics in during the 1936 Olympics. “Before Tiger Woods, it was Sam Snead. At the time my of interest in learning to play golf (1939), Blacks/African Americans were not allowed to be a member of the PGA. Also, not much media was about Black golfers,” Simmons said in the interview.

Mr. Simmons’ legacy of service, mentorship, and dedication to diversity in golf will be remembered and cherished by all who had the privilege to know him. The Simmons family announces the memorial service details HERE.

7th Annual Central Florida Business Diversity Council Black Heritage Golf Tournament Delivers Motown Vibes, Barbecue and Inspiration

The excitement began on Friday, February 21, 2025 with a Motown Explosion Barbecue Meet and Greet. Attendees enjoyed delicious food and lively music, setting a festive tone for the weekend. The highlight of the evening was the inspiring presence of Miller London, a former sales manager at Motown Records, who shared his insights into the music industry and the importance of diversity in business.

On Saturday, February 22, organizers proudly kicked off the 7th Annual Black Heritage Golf Tournament at the beautiful Cleveland Heights Golf Course in Lakeland, Florida. This tournament continues to be a hallmark event for the Central Florida Business Diversity Council (CFBDC), celebrating Black heritage while fostering community connections and promoting diversity within the business sector.

As the tournament got underway, players enjoyed a full day of golf on the well-manicured course. Teams competed in a friendly yet competitive environment, with various contests throughout the day, including: Longest Drive, Closest to the Pin, and Putting Challenge.

The tournament format was a scramble, encouraging teamwork and collaboration among participants. The sun shone brightly, and the spirit of friendly competition filled the air as players navigated the course.

Throughout the day, players had multiple opportunities to network with fellow business professionals, fostering connections that extend beyond the golf course. This was led by a team with over 50+ years of experience and $2,5 billion invested globally.

Registration Open for 2025 PGA Family Golf Championship on Labor Day Weekend at Whistling Straits & Blackwolf Run

Amateur and Professional divisions offer PGA of America Golf Professionals and recreational golfers alike the opportunity to team up with family Aug. 30-31

FRISCO, Texas (March 5, 2025) – Registration is open for the third annual PGA Family Golf Championship to be held on the acclaimed courses at Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run in Kohler, Wisconsin, Aug. 30-31, 2025. Families can register here.

The PGA Family Golf Championship welcomes teams of 2-4 players who are biologically or legally related to compete in one of two divisions. The Amateur division is open to golfers of all skill levels, while the Professional division includes teams with a PGA of America Golf Professional or LPGA Golf Professional. In alignment with the American Development Model (ADM), competitors must be at least 10 years of age on August 30, 2025.

“Golf brings people together, and PGA Family Golf brings families together; there is nothing better than spending time with the people you love, off the grid and on the grass,” said PGA of America President Don Rea Jr., PGA Master Professional and Owner/Operator of Augusta Ranch Golf Club (Arizona).  “Our partners at Kohler Golf value family, and together we have created an unforgettable experience for families that blends fun and competition. The event kicks off Friday, Aug. 29, with a round on the par-3 Baths Course, followed by an evening reception onsite. Two days of team scramble competition begins Saturday, Aug. 30, on the Meadow Valleys Course, followed by the final round on Sunday, Aug. 31, on the Irish Course.

A limited number of rounds are available exclusively for PGA Family Golf Championship participants on The Straits Course, host of the 43rd Ryder Cup (2021) and PGA Championship (2015, 2010, 2004), on Friday (Aug. 29) or Monday (Sept. 1). Registrants can secure a time on a first-come, first-serve basis during online registration at a special rate. Additionally, a limited number of rooms have been reserved at a special group rate at The American Club as well as the Inn on Woodlake; details will be provided with registration.

Roy Ayers, ‘Everybody Loves the Sunshine’ musician dies at 84

Roy Ayers, the legendary musician known for the iconic song Everybody Loves the Sunshine, has passed away at the age of 84.

His family announced his passing in a Facebook post on Wednesday evening, stating, “It is with great sadness that the family of legendary vibraphonist, composer, and producer Roy Ayers announce his passing, which occurred on March 4, 2025, in New York City after a long illness.”

The statement continued, “He lived a beautiful 84 years and will be sorely missed. His family asks that you respect their privacy at this time. A celebration of Roy’s life will be forthcoming.”

Born in Los Angeles, Ayers developed a passion for music at a young age. According to his website, he formed a music group while still in high school before continuing his studies in advanced music theory at Los Angeles City College. In the 1960s, he gained recognition as an award-winning jazz vibraphonist before evolving into a popular R&B bandleader in the 1970s and 1980s.

His breakthrough hit, Everybody Loves the Sunshine, was released in 1976 as part of his album of the same name, recorded with his Roy Ayers Ubiquity band.

Throughout his career, Ayers released numerous influential projects, including his 1978 album Let’s Do It, which featured gospel singer Merry Clayton on several tracks. He continued to explore new sounds with albums such as You Might Be Surprised in 1985 and Nasté in 1995.

Ayers’ innovative fusion of jazz, R&B, and funk left an enduring impact on music, influencing generations of artists.
