Thursday, July 30: Action began at 7:00 AM EST from both the Detroit Golf Club‘s first and tenth tees, with notable early groups including Brendon Todd, Ricky Castillo with Tony Finau, and a group featuring Nick Dunlap and Wyndham Clark. For me the highlight of the morning was seeing the look on our Agronomy Intern, Kevin White, Jr.’s face as he realized his work from the previous 4 days was about to be seen by the golf world.
Kevin has put in countless hours as many have discovered by reading his daily diaries. It is truly a joy on my part to witness his hard work being recognized by the Detroit Golf Club’s Director of Agronomy and Golf Course Superintendent, Sam Moynihan. Sam during the course of one of our conversations said, “Having Kevin here volunteering this week has been an incredible help to the staff and the team. Exposing new people to tournament turgrass preparations is always something I look forward to each year.”
I also find the varied questions and conversations Kevin is having with both the DGC Greenskeepers and other volunteers from golf courses across the country intriguing as he engages them. Those working alongside Kevin are seeing a great mind at work offering a different perspective and creating an open house for intellectual curiosity.
Bottom line: I am thrilled Kevin is experiencing this opportunity, and I cannot wait to see how he builds upon it.
