Tradition Versus Modernity The PGA Logo Redesign Sparks Industry Debate
Why the PGA’s New Logo Is Dividing Golf Professionals
In 2023, the PGA of America rolled out a refreshed logo and brand identity aimed at modernizing the organization’s image and better distinguishing it from the similarly named PGA Tour. The new design features a simplified, digital-friendly wordmark that emphasizes “PGA” with “of America” clearly noted beneath it, along with imagery designed to signal both heritage and accessibility for a broader audience. The accompanying “We Love This Game” marketing campaign was positioned as a way to connect with new golfers and fans in an increasingly digital world.
Supporters of the logo change argue the update was necessary for the organization’s future relevance, particularly as the sports world evolves and younger audiences consume branding differently. According to Sports Business Journal, Jeff Price, Chief Commercial Officer of the PGA of America, explained the reasoning behind the redesign, saying, “We have a functional challenge that we’re trying to solve with a modern, simplified design. The ‘of America’ component as our differentiator is really important, and it’s most times just not legible to the consumer.” This emphasis on clarity was intended to reduce the long-standing confusion between the PGA of America — which represents professionals who teach and grow the game — and the PGA Tour, which is known primarily for its elite weekly tournaments.
From the perspective of some PGA professionals, the rebrand offered an opportunity to refocus the organization’s identity on its mission. “Highlighting the word professional is important to me,” said Richard Wehringer, a PGA professional in a public LinkedIn discussion of the changes. He added that emphasizing expertise in the brand could help differentiate PGA of America golf professionals from other parts of the golf industry. “We are marketed as experts in the game,” Wehringer said, arguing that the updated visual identity opens conversations about the role PGA members play at the grassroots level.
Even within the community that supports rebranding efforts, there are nuanced views about whether the new logo alone is sufficient. Mark Anderson, another PGA professional, acknowledged on the linkedIn debate openly, noting that while a refreshed logo might seem like a step forward, discussions about its effectiveness would likely continue. “Many golf professionals who are in the trenches daily disagree,” Anderson observed, highlighting that some feel the older logo had stronger impact in print and traditional applications. “Our older logo was unique and its design eyecatching.” His statement reflects a desire among some members to maintain aspects of tradition even while adapting for modern use.
Critics of the redesign have also voiced skepticism about the value of changing a longstanding emblem tied closely to golf tradition. Some observers in the golf community have questioned whether a new logo — even one tied to an updated marketing strategy — truly addresses the deeper challenges facing the sport, such as declining participation in some demographics or competition with other golf tours. Social media threads and informal discussions have pointed to a belief among traditionalists that the identity and heritage of golf carry value that can be diluted with visual changes. While not all of these views come from industry leaders, they illustrate a significant and vocal segment of golfers who feel branding adjustments should be approached with caution.
Despite the mixed reactions, the PGA of America maintains that the logo and brand campaign will help clarify its mission and broaden its appeal. By accentuating the association’s founding year and highlighting its unique role separate from the PGA Tour, the organization believes it can strengthen connections with both existing golf professionals and new golfers entering the sport. Whether this strategy succeeds in uniting the broader golf community under a refreshed visual identity remains a topic of ongoing conversation among professionals and fans alike.

The Concession was derived from the 18th Ryder Cup held September 18-20, 1969, at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, England. The competition ended in a tie at 16 points each, when America’s Jack Nicklaus conceded a missable three-foot putt to Britain’s Tony Jacklin at the 18th hole, in one of the most famous gestures of sportsmanship in all of sports. It was the first tie in Ryder Cup history, and the United States team retained the cup.
Eric Brown was the European Captain and Sam Stead was the U.S. Captain.
Playing in his first Ryder Cup at age 29, Nicklaus’s gesture became known as “The Concession” and marked the beginning of a lasting friendship between the two that has spanned nearly a half-century. It was the inspiration for the Concession Golf Club, in Bradenton, Fl., which was co-designed by Nicklaus and Jacklin.
U.S. Captain Sam Snead was furious that the chance of outright victory had been given away.
Note: Former LPGA number (1) ranked golfer Nellie Korda and her sister Jessica Korda are from Bradenton, FL. Nellie is a member of Concession Golf Club.

23 recent college and university graduates from diverse backgrounds
will get their first opportunities to enter the golf industry
FRISCO, Texas (Sept. 19, 2023) – PGA REACH, the 501(c)(3) charitable foundation of the PGA of America, has announced the 2023 class for the PGA WORKS Fellowship.
The PGA WORKS Fellowship, established in 2017, provides the opportunity for a one-year, paid immersion in a PGA Section’s Foundation operations. PGA Sections oversee the 41 regions of the PGA of America across the United States and help create the network of communication and community for PGA of America Golf Professionals and amateur golfers nationwide.
The PGA WORKS Fellowship is one of the most valuable, entry-level opportunities for individuals from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds to gain experience in all facets of the golf industry. The Fellowship gives recent college and university graduates a first-hand look at everything that a career in the $102 billion golf industry can provide.
The primary responsibilities of this year’s 23 PGA WORKS Fellows are to support and execute philanthropic initiatives for the charitable foundations of their respective PGA of America Sections. This includes assisting with marketing, communications and fundraising activities, as well as PGA HOPE programming for Veterans and junior golf initiatives, such as PGA Jr. League and Drive, Chip & Putt.
“The PGA WORKS Fellowship program continues to be a pathway of opportunity and inclusivity within the golf industry,” said PGA of America President John Lindert, PGA Director of Golf at The Country Club of Lansing in Lansing, Michigan. “We look forward to seeing the impact this class of Fellows can make for years to come, not only within their respective PGA of America Sections, but to the many individuals they will meet through working in golf. I’ve seen the PGA WORKS Fellowship first-hand as we had a former Fellow for the Michigan PGA Section who worked for The Country Club of Lansing as she continued her pursuit of a fulfilling career within the industry.”
As part of PGA WORKS’ mission, the Fellows are encouraged to continue their careers in golf following their fellowships with direct access to both PGA of America Career Consultants and personal mentors to help them achieve their career goals.
Past Fellows have gone on to work for GOLFTEC, The Honda Classic, Westchester Country Club, the First Tee and The Club at the Strand, among other golf companies and organizations. Additionally, several Fellows have worked full-time in PGA Section Offices across the country, as well as for universities and sports teams. Others have continued their education in graduate school. In the history of the PGA WORKS Fellowship, 81 percent of all Fellows have acquired jobs within the golf industry, and 85 percent have acquired full-time positions upon completing their fellowship.

Recruit Excellence: John Thompson, A Rising Golf Star Worth Your College Golf Team’s Consideration
In the world of collegiate golf, talent, dedication, and a passion for the sport are paramount. Meet John Thompson, a 17-year-old golfer hailing from Columbia, South Carolina, whose journey on the greens is nothing short of remarkable. John isn’t just a golfer; he’s a golfer with an inspiring story, undeniable potential, and the determination to make a significant impact on your college golf team.
As golf legend Tiger Woods once said, “The most rewarding things you do in life are often the ones that look like they cannot be done.” John’s journey embodies this sentiment, illustrating how perseverance can turn improbable dreams into reality.
John’s love affair with golf began at the tender age of three. His early inspiration came from none other than his father, Ro Thompson, who introduced him to the sport. What started as a father-son bonding activity quickly transformed into a lifelong passion for John. His love for golf was further fueled by the thrill of competition, and he has been on a relentless pursuit of excellence ever since.
Take a look at John’s golf journey. His last few top finishes are studded with remarkable achievements:
– SC Junior Match Play T9 finish 72 advanced to the round of 16
– GSA Sparkle City Shootout T18 finish 77
– SCJGA Qualifier 1st finish 71
– 5A State Championship T41 with a 2nd round 72
– 5A Upper State T18 finish 78
Additionally, John has secured victory in several tournaments on the SCJGA (South Carolina Junior Golf Association) and the US Kids Tour, demonstrating his prowess on the course. Remarkably, as a freshman and sophomore, John advanced to the 5A State Championship as an individual, a testament to his individual skill and leadership. His well-honed skills earned a spot on the Underrated Tour, sponsored by NBA superstar Steph Curry, showcasing his potential as a rising star in the golfing world. And, he was also accepted into the PGA Progression Camp in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, indicating his commitment to further bettering his skills.
John’s selection for the Congaree Global Golf Initiative in Ridgeland, South Carolina, underscores his dedication to not only his own growth but also to the broader golfing community.
Notably, African American participation in college golf is on the rise. Recent statistics reveal a 22% increase in African American golfers participating in collegiate programs across the United States in 2019. John’s presence on a college golf team would not only contribute to this positive trend but also add a unique perspective and talent to any school’s golf team roster.
To stay competitive, John is consistent in his practice regimen. “When I get to the course my practice schedule is 30 minutes of putting, 30 minutes of chipping and bunker play, and 30 minutes of mastering my ball flights on range. I then follow this with 9 holes of play. And, after that, a little more putting,” says John.
John’s parents, Ro and Karen Thompson, have been unwavering pillars of support throughout his golfing journey. Their dedication to his success, both financially and in terms of time management, has been instrumental in shaping John into the golfer and young man he is today. They have ensured that he has the tools, guidance, and opportunities necessary to thrive in both academics and golf.
John hopes to receive a college scholarship towards his aim of making it to the PGA Tour. In choosing a college, John says, “One major factor in my decision in selecting a school is that it be located in the South and that has a PGA Program.” A few on his list include Coastal Carolina University (offers the PGA Management program), Howard University, North Carolina Central, Florida A&M University, and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
This young man’s golfing journey is marked by not only remarkable achievements but also an unyielding determination to succeed.
