Ross Addington Harris: A Young Golfer’s Journey of Inspiration and Success
Ross Addington Harris, a 12-year-old golf prodigy from Tampa, Florida, has made remarkable strides in the world of golf, fueled by his passion and unwavering dedication. In an exclusive interview, Ross shared insights into his journey, his inspirations, and his love for the sport that has become an integral part of his life.
Ross’s tryst with golf began at the age of 8, in 2019, after being captivated by a TV show called “The Short Game,” featuring talented young golfers competing on a global level. Recalling the initial spark, Ross says, “Watching kids my age play golf at such a high level was incredibly exciting and interesting. It motivated me to give the sport a try.” Despite his involvement in football and basketball, Ross found golf to be a captivating and rewarding endeavor.
When asked about his biggest inspiration in golf, Ross acknowledges the invaluable guidance he received from two living legends, Mr. James Black and Mr. Jim Dent. These encounters significantly impacted Ross’s game, and he expresses his gratitude, stating, “Mr. James Black helped me develop my swing, and Mr. Jim Dent shared valuable tips that improved my overall performance. Their mentorship has been instrumental in shaping my journey.”
Among the various aspects of golf, Ross finds putting to be the most enjoyable. He emphasizes that putting demands focus, concentration, and precision, making it a thrilling part of the game. Ross’s ability to excel under pressure earned him the nickname “Clutch” from his coach, highlighting his reliability in critical situations during team scrambles. He adds, “Being able to sink a crucial putt that the team needs is an incredible feeling.”
Balancing golf practice with school commitments is a priority for Ross. He diligently divides his time, dedicating three days a week to golf practice while focusing on his studies and reading every day. This disciplined approach allows him to excel in both spheres and underscores his commitment to personal growth.
Reflecting on memorable achievements, Ross shares a standout moment when he scored an eagle on a par 4 hole. Recounting the thrilling shot, he describes hitting his second shot over a pond and a bunker, which landed on the green and rolled directly into the hole. Ross affectionately refers to it as his “hole in 2,” a remarkable feat that left an indelible mark on his golfing journey.
Ross has also played in US Kids and Under Armour junior tours in Tampa Bay. He played in the first National Under Armour Championship at Disney in 2020. Ross was invited by Under Armour to compete in their World Championship in July. So he’s now competing on a global level like the kids from the TV show (full circle).
Ross’s home golf course is Rogers Park, located in Tampa, Florida. With an unmatched commitment to the sport, his parents, Marco Harris (dad), Carmen Harris (mom) are very supportive. Ross who often practices and plays alongside his father at Rogers Park on Saturdays —when he’s not playing football, humbly admits that his scores usually surpass his father’s, highlighting his rapid development and talent.
As a youth golfer, Ross has encountered challenges, particularly when he first began competing in tournaments against more seasoned players. Building confidence and practicing tirelessly to compete on a competitive level were pivotal in overcoming these challenges. Ross fondly recalls the moment he stood shoulder-to-shoulder with experienced players, showcasing his skills, which he considers a great accomplishment.
Driven by his love for golf and a desire to inspire other young individuals, Ross embarked on writing a book. The inspiration came after creating a school project video titled “Harris Hawk and the Golden Golf Ball,” which won first place. The book serves as a means to motivate other children to explore the exciting and rewarding world of golf.
Ross’s book, “Harris Hawk and the Golden Golf Ball,” is available in various formats, including paperback, hardcover, e-Book, and audio. It can be purchased on Amazon and through other online book merchandisers, with prices ranging from $2.99 to $20.99.
Beyond the golf course, the impact of the sport on Ross’s life is profound. Participating in the First Tee program, Ross has embraced nine principles that have fostered his confidence, not only in golf but also in school, other sports, and social environments. These principles have empowered him to approach life with resilience and determination.
Streamsong Golf Resort, located in Bowling Green, Florida, holds a special place in Ross’s heart. The course’s scenic beauty, hills, tall sand dunes, and natural bunkers provide a thrilling and challenging experience. Ross’s first visit to Streamsong resulted in a triumphant first-place finish in his age group, an exhilarating achievement he cherishes.
Offering advice to young golfers starting their journey, Ross emphasizes the importance of finding a good coach, practicing diligently, staying physically fit, and having fun while playing with friends and family. He also highlights the abundance of scholarship opportunities available in golf, motivating aspiring golfers to pursue their dreams.

When it comes to golfers he admires, Ross looks up to his coach, Dr. J. Donald Phillips. Ross’s ultimate goal is to surpass his coach’s skills and defeat him in a match, a challenge Dr. Phillips believes cannot be accomplished. The determination and drive to excel fuels Ross’s ambition to become a formidable golfer.
Ross proudly associates himself with the First Tee of Tampa Bay, an organization that has played a vital role in his golfing journey. This membership serves as a testament to his commitment to personal growth, sportsmanship, and the values instilled by the First Tee program.
Ross Addington Harris exemplifies the spirit of resilience, dedication, and passion that drives young golfers to achieve greatness. His journey serves as an inspiration for aspiring golfers worldwide, proving that with hard work, mentorship, and a love for the game, the possibilities are limitless.

The Inspiring Journey of Ronald Davis and The GLOVe Foundation, Empowering Youth through Golf
Ronald Davis, a passionate advocate for youth development, has dedicated his life to making a difference through the power of golf. As the founder of The GLOVe Foundation, he has created a platform that not only introduces inner-city youth to the game of golf but also instills valuable life skills, values, and opportunities for their personal growth and success.
The GLOVe Foundation is the acronym for Golf, Life-Skills, Opportunity, Values and Enrichment (power of e). It operates as a non-profit organization with an Alabama Incorporation and IRS 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. Davis, along with his esteemed board members, all local Mobile residents, comprised of retired executives, educators, entrepreneurs, scientists, and bankers, work tirelessly to mentor and guide the youth in Mobile, Alabama.
“We are in the process of creating a national advisory board composed of prominent individuals from the southeast region (Alabama, Georgia and Florida),” says Davis, who has identified 5 individuals to serve in this capacity and they will be announced at a later time. The foundation’s primary focus is introducing golf to inner-city youth, regardless of their ethnicity. Davis firmly believes that teaching soft skills alongside traditional education will improve their chances of leading successful and fulfilling lives. Golf, unlike most sports, offers a lifelong pursuit that transcends age, making it a perfect avenue for personal development.
Through strategic partnerships and affiliations, The GLOVe Foundation has been able to provide impactful programs and opportunities for its participants. The foundation has been a proud LPGA/USGA Girls Golf site since 2012, with an annual enrollment of over 200 girls, predominantly African American. Multiple grants, such as the Participation Grant, Sandy Labauve, and Renee Powell, have recognized and supported their exceptional work. “It’s because of our applications and awarding of grants, we are currently able to provide the lessons to the participants at no cost,” said Davis.
“Our E-Leader (Allyson Bell) will be participating in the 2023 US Women Open: “Day At The Hay”, at Pebble Beach. She also serves on the National E-Leaders Board of Directors and has been affiliated with our program since the age of 5,” said Davis proudly.
Collaboration with the Mobile County Commission has been instrumental in organizing the “LIKE ME!” Clinic/Exhibition, which features professional golfers from the EPSON and APGA tours. This event allows inner-city youth to witness individuals who resemble them excel in the game of golf, inspiring them to believe in their own abilities. And, it is working.
Furthermore, The GLOVe Foundation has forged partnerships with organizations like the American Golf Industry Coalition, the Golf Course Builders Association of America, and the Gulf Coast Chapter of the First Tee. In 2019, they became a programmatic partner with the City of Mobile’s Parks and Recreation Department. “Through this affiliation, we have complete access to the city’s municipal golf course. These affiliations have brought in valuable resources, including grants, junior golf club sets, access to municipal golf courses, and First Tee programming, said Davis. “All of our volunteer coaches have been Level 1 certified and will begin offering First Tee programming either late summer or early fall of this year. We will more than likely begin charging a fee to participate because of the nature of the First Tee fee structure.”
“Golf Course Builders Association of America has provided us with 20 sets of junior golf clubs over the past 5 or more years through their Sticks-For-Kids. Because of this generous contribution, parents do not have to invest in golf clubs until the child illustrates a profound interest and skill development.”
Despite the remarkable achievements, 66-year-old Davis acknowledges that space remains the foundation’s biggest challenge. To address this, plans are underway to build a golf training/education support facility and a nine-hole executive course. Grants and fundraising activities are being pursued to turn this vision into a reality.
Ronald Davis’s journey has been shaped by his humble upbringing in Selma, Alabama, and his own experiences as a college athlete and educator. He draws inspiration from the mentors and supportive community that guided him through life’s challenges. Now retired after 40 years of service, Davis devotes his days to growing The GLOVe Foundation and expanding its positive impact on the lives of countless young individuals.
The GLOVe Foundation under Davis’ leadership is a shining example of how golf can transcend its boundaries to empower and uplift the next generation. Through their dedication, mentorship, and provision of opportunities, they are creating a pathway for inner-city youth to discover their potential, develop valuable skills, and believe in a future filled with success and happiness.

St. Augustine, Fla. – June 14, 2023 – St. Johns Cultural Council has announced $50,000 in funding from the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund, a program from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The Council’s project is one of only 40 selected from more than 600 applications from organizations across the United States.
According to Christina Parrish Stone, St. Johns Cultural Council’s Executive Director, the funding will support the St. Johns County African American Heritage Trail and a celebration in June 2024 with local partner organizations. “We are grateful to the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund for their support of our dedication to telling stories about African American achievement and resilience in St. Johns County,” said Parrish Stone.
The funding helps St. Johns Cultural Council to continue public programs and services pertaining to African American cultural heritage and sites including Fort Mose Historic State Park, ACCORD Museum and Freedom Trail, Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center (LMCC), Lincolnville Historic District, the SEA community, Beluthahatchee Park, Butler Beach, and the St. Augustine Beach Hotel.
The Council will utilize grant funding for development of a new St. Johns County African American Heritage Trail, as well as activities and performances next year at various locations. Celebration events will be scheduled to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the civil rights demonstrations in St. Augustine that were central to the movement and eventual passage of the Civil Rights Act. “The St. Johns County Cultural Council will continue to create, promote, and raise awareness about the history of the area while increasing visitor engagement,” she said.
St. Augustine is home to a city known for its fusion of African American, Indigenous, and Spanish colonial history, and represents the southern-most point of the Gullah Geechee National Heritage Corridor. St. Johns County is comprised of some of the most historically significant imprints in the state of Florida.

When Savannah Mitchell embarked on her journey to establish Sunday Morning Coffee Company in 2021, she was well aware of the challenges that awaited her in the male-dominated coffee industry. However, what Mitchell didn’t anticipate was the rapid growth her business would experience, driven by its unique emphasis on the coffee experience and the culture it creates. Breaking new ground as part of the LPGA’s innovative VendorMatch Program, this initiative aims to showcase diverse and locally-owned suppliers at select tournaments and events. In a recent milestone, Sunday Morning Coffee Company, alongside Clearly Branded and Living Juice, had the honor of being selected to participate in the prestigious LPGA Cognizant Founder’s Cup.
Sunday Morning Coffee, primarily an e-commerce enterprise, now boasts an impressive selection of 14 luxurious blends, catering to customers and companies nationwide. Their products can be purchased through their website, as well as prominent retailers such as Amazon, Staples, and Wegmans. The company also offers gift cards, subscriptions, recipes and coffee education.
As the business has flourished, so too have the prospects for expanding its reach. Notably, through the LPGA VendorMatch program, which actively seeks out local and diverse suppliers for tournaments and LPGA headquarters, Sunday Morning Coffee Company was entrusted with supplying coffee for the illustrious 2023 Cognizant Founder’s Cup held in Clifton, New Jersey. As a Black- and woman-owned business, Sunday Morning Coffee Company seizes every opportunity to foster brand growth and shatter the glass ceiling.

“Students from Washington, D.C.’s McKinley Technical Senior High School, The Field School and Prince George’s County Maryland Jack & Jill of America participated in a morning of unique STEAMa (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math & Agriculture) learning opportunities. Over the course of 2.5 hours students rotated through learning stations covering topics such as soil and plant science, golf course ecology, testing water quality, and various math calculations using actual problems golf course superintendents need to solve on a daily basis. Working with golf course superintendents the students applied their classroom knowledge in an outdoor setting and through an understanding of how STEM concepts can have real-world applications allowing students to find added inspiration in their schoolwork and in the possibility of a career in golf,” stated Kirby.
“The diverse set of students also had a chance to visit with and talk to former XLIII Super Bowl MVP, Santonio Holmes, CEO, 10AllIn Foundation and Washington, D.C. City Council Member Zachary Parker who took time out of their schedules to be at the golf course as the students gained an invaluable learning experience,” concluded Kirby.
National Golf Day has a rich history dating back to the 1950s, serving as a global platform to honor golfers from various corners of the world. It serves as a unifying event, bringing individuals together to grab their clubs and head out to the golf course. Interestingly, golf has roots that trace back even further, as ancient Egyptians used wooden sticks to play a comparable game. Whether you’re a novice golfer or a seasoned enthusiast, National Golf Day provides a wonderful opportunity to indulge in the sport we hold dear and embrace the joy it brings.
The planning for the 2024 National Golf Day is already in progress, and details will be available in the upcoming months.
PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan Resigns from His Post to Recover From Medical Situation
In a statement issued on Tuesday evening by PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan and the PGA Tour Policy Board, it was revealed that Monahan is currently recovering from a “medical situation.” While no specific details were provided about the nature of his condition, the statement emphasized the Board’s full support for Monahan and requested respect for his privacy during this time. In his absence, Ron Price, Chief Operating Officer, and Tyler Dennis, Executive Vice President & President, PGA TOUR, will assume leadership of the day-to-day operations with the assistance of the capable team Monahan has assembled, ensuring a seamless continuity. The Tour promised to provide updates as appropriate.
Over the past couple of years, the 53-year-old Monahan has played a pivotal role in navigating a turbulent period in professional golf. He has successfully steered the Tour through power struggles and contentious legal battles with LIV Golf. Just last week, Monahan made headlines by announcing an unexpected partnership with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which supports LIV Golf. This decision prompted Monahan to face a challenging meeting with the players at the Canadian Open, during which he had to explain the reasons behind partnering with the investors of a league that the Tour had been at odds with for months.
Former U.S. Open winner Geoff Ogilvy expressed sympathy for Monahan after witnessing the intense atmosphere of the meeting, stating, “I’m glad I wasn’t Jay today. There’s some grumpy players in there.” Additionally, Monahan has faced criticism from 9/11 support groups for seemingly contradicting the strong moral stance he initially took against the Saudi-funded operation.
In response to the backlash, Monahan addressed the media ahead of the tournament, acknowledging the accusations of hypocrisy. He clarified that his previous statements were made based on the information available to him at the time and from the perspective of someone striving to advocate for the PGA Tour and its players.
Monahan assumed the role of commissioner in 2017, following his tenure in various positions within the organization, including deputy commissioner and chief operating officer.
As Monahan focuses on his recovery, the golf community remains supportive, recognizing the challenges he has faced and appreciating his contributions to the sport.
