Ed Thorpe Goes Beyond the Game: A Veteran’s Mission to Create Wellness Apparel for Future Generations
Edward Thorpe Jr., a 67-year-old entrepreneur from Champaign, Illinois, is the proud founder of T.P.H. Wellness, a Black-owned family business specializing in custom sports uniforms and apparel. Raised in Champaign, Illinois, Thorpe graduated from Urbana High School and later attended Parkland Community College before serving six years in the U.S. Army as a Culinary Specialist. While golf hasn’t been a large part of his life—he’s only played a few times—Thorpe’s professional journey reflects a deep commitment to family, entrepreneurship, and creating a lasting legacy.
Thorpe’s exposure to golf came later in life during a company outing for Prudential, where his wife worked. Although golf didn’t become a major hobby, his focus remained on raising his two sons and supporting them in their extracurricular activities. “I spent the majority of my time with my kids and being involved in their extracurricular activities,” Thorpe shared, underscoring his dedication to family above personal leisure.

In 2012, Thorpe founded T.P.H. Wellness, an LLC that designs and manufactures custom uniforms and apparel for various sports. What sets his company apart is its use of innovative materials, including bamboo and fire-infrared fabrics, which offer benefits for the body that are rarely seen in traditional sportswear. “I saw a need for another brand/style of clothing/uniforms, and being able to do it with fire infrared and bamboo materials has been a plus as many other companies are not using these,” Thorpe explained. His vision is to create a unique product that not only serves athletes but also promotes wellness.
Starting T.P.H. Wellness was a personal and financial investment. Thorpe self-financed the company, determined to turn his vision into reality. “I have used my own money to get this off the ground,” he said, demonstrating his belief in the business. Despite the challenges of being a smaller, lesser-known brand, he remains optimistic and committed to growing the company. “Some challenges are getting people to take a chance on something and someone that isn’t a big-named corp,” he admitted. However, through word-of-mouth and a strong social media presence, T.P.H. Wellness continues to build a loyal customer base. Thorpe emphasizes that each order exceeds customer expectations, a strategy aimed at generating positive referrals and repeat business.

Family plays a crucial role in Thorpe’s entrepreneurial journey. He credits his wife, Clara, whom he’s been married to for 47 years, for her unwavering support, calling her his “best friend and confidant.” Their two sons, Christopher and Jeremy, also contribute to the business by spreading the word and helping with orders. “My wife and I have 2 sons…they help out as much as they can,” Thorpe said, proud of how the business has become a family affair.
When asked about the most fulfilling aspect of running T.P.H. Wellness, Thorpe emphasized that it is a Black-owned business with strong Christian values, built to leave a lasting legacy for his children and grandchildren. “I am working to leave something for my kids and grandkids,” Thorpe shared, highlighting his long-term vision. His commitment to building a brand that prioritizes customer satisfaction, family involvement, and community well-being is central to his approach.
Looking ahead, Thorpe remains focused on providing high-quality products and continuing to grow his company. He wants customers to know that T.P.H. Wellness is a Veteran and Christian-owned business dedicated to making its customers happy and leaving a positive impact. “We want to provide a great product and make our customers happy,” he stated.
Through resilience, innovation, and family support, Edward Thorpe Jr. has built a business that not only meets the needs of athletes but also upholds his values and aspirations. T.P.H. Wellness is more about T.P.H. Wellness by visiting TPHSPORTS.com
Metropolitan Jewels Celebrate Golf and Unity in Ohio: A Weekend to Remember

In September, the Metropolitan Jewels Ladies Golf Club traveled to Canton, Ohio to play on the historic Clearview Golf Club, the oldest Black-owned course in America. The fall golf tournament, hosted by the Wake Robin Golf Club (Maryland) — one of the oldest women’s golf clubs in the United States, brought together passionate women golfers from up and down the East Coast and as far west as Chicago.
Founded in 1946 by Dr. William Powell and his wife Marcella, Clearview was created with a powerful vision: to establish “America’s Golf Course,” where everyone, regardless of race, could enjoy the game. After returning from WWII, Dr. Powell was unable to find a course that would allow African Americans to play, and thus Clearview was born. Today, Renee Powell, the second Black woman on the LPGA tour, sits at the helm of what her father created.

The Jewels’ weekend began with 18 holes at Clearview on Friday, joined by sister organizations—the Winston Lake Ladies Golf Association and the Triangle Women in Golf (TWIG), both hailing from North Carolina. The atmosphere was filled with camaraderie, competition, and the thrill of the game. The legacy of Clearview and the hospitality of Ms. Powell was the perfect environment, blending the significance of the course’s history with the power of new friendships.

However, Ohio’s severe drought posed a unique challenge. The state’s dry conditions had wreaked havoc on the greens, and Clearview, unlike modern courses, does not have an irrigation system. Built by Dr. Powell’s hands, Clearview has historically relied on nature to sustain its grounds, but today, Renee Powell, Dr. Powell’s daughter, is raising $2 million to install a modern irrigation system that will preserve her father’s legacy. The Jewels left inspired to join this cause.
On Saturday, the three clubs continued their Ohio adventure at Pleasant View Golf Course in Paris, Ohio, founded by friends and allies of the Powells. At Pleasant View, the ladies connected with two of the owners of The Quarry Golf Club, in Canton, Ohio. At the owners’ invitation, the Jewels, Winston-Lake, and TWIG enjoyed a wonderful dinner at The Quarry Golf Club Grille. The ladies further connected over a great meal with the picturesque lake of the Quarry as a backdrop, further emphasizing the untold African American contribution to the game of golf.

Determined to support Clearview’s future, the Jewels, with the help of public relations agency TJM & Co. Media Boutique, are planning a celebrity golf tournament in spring 2025 to raise funds and awareness for Clearview’s new irrigation system. This event promises to unite the golf community around a worthy cause and ensure Clearview’s legacy thrives for generations to come.

For the Jewels, playing on a historic course alongside several other women’s clubs, was a meaningful reminder of the power of golf to unite people across cultures and generations.

Author Dr. Al B Quarles II has released Under the Concrete Crown. This fictional book is a gripping tale of survival, loyalty, and the brutal realities of life in the streets of Philadelphia and beyond. Filled with fast-paced and unforgettable characters, this novel takes readers deep into the hidden corners of the “City of Brotherly Love,” through a crime-riddled heart and the dangerous wilderness where only the strongest make it out alive. Available on Amazon in paperback and Kindle.
In the gritty streets of North Philadelphia, survival is not just an option—it’s a requirement. Amber-Rainne Mercedes Johnson, known on the streets as “Duchess,” has learned that lesson early. At just 14, she’s already living the life of a seasoned survivor, juggling the legacy of her father—a kingpin in the city’s criminal underworld—and the heartache of her mother’s descent into addiction. The concrete jungle she calls home is ruled by crime, betrayal, and unforgiving power plays.
But Duchess is not alone. Across Philly’s fractured landscape, five other teens—each from different corners of the city’s ethnic enclaves—are also struggling to survive the violent game of gangster politics. From Jonah Bellucci in Little Italy to Akbar Muhammad in the Black Muslim Syndicate, their lives are destined to collide. And when they do, everything changes.
Their journey takes a dangerous turn when they are kidnapped and taken to the rugged wilderness of the Pocono Mountains. Forced to compete in brutal survival challenges, the teens must endure the elements, wild predators, and the constant threat of betrayal. The stakes are high—only one of them will be allowed to return home. In this deadly game, they discover that the wilderness is just as treacherous as the streets they left behind.
In a world where loyalty is more valuable than gold and betrayal can cost you your life, Duchess and her unlikely allies must navigate the treacherous underworld of Philadelphia and the unforgiving wilderness of the Poconos. Rival factions battle for dominance, and the crown is not made of gold, but of concrete—heavy, cold, and stained with blood.
Kaylee Gatlin, 15-Year-Old Germantown Sophomore Golfer Wins Big at 7A State Golf Tournament

JACKSON, Miss. —A junior golfer from Germantown High School is back in the headlines yet again after dominating the green during a state tournament. Kaylee Gatlin took home first place in the MHSAA 7A state tournament. The teenager credits trusting her training for securing the win. “I had ‘Mamba mentality,’ as you would say. (I was) just going for the gold, and it was a tight day the whole day,” Gatlin said.
Gatlin has become somewhat of a local golf phenom, as she traveled the country over the summer, playing in NBA star Stephen Curry’s “Underrated” Golf Tour.

Kaylee Gatlin has a natural swing — just ask her very first competitor, her dad. She very well could be one of the best junior golfers in Mississippi — and she has scores that might be better than most players. Last fall, the young golfer won the Randy Watkins Junior Tournament. She was also the player of the year for the Bank Plus Junior Tour.

The junior golfer shot two over during the two-day tournament at Patrick Farms golf course. She went up against other players from as far as Ocean Springs and Starkville. “It feels pretty great. I don’t think it has kicked in yet, but next week, I’ll be more stoked,” she said.

In a social media post, Gatlin thanked her family and friends for supporting her. “I’d like to thank my family for teaching me hard work pays off and I guess they were right,” Gatlin said. Kaylee is now turning her focus to the all-star tournament, where the best golfers in the state will hit the green for ‘match play‘ at Dancing Rabbit in Philadelphia, Mississippi. The teenager thanked her mom and dad, who she calls her hydration specialist, transportation service, and camera crew.

Tim O’Neal Wins Dominion Energy Charity Classic, Breaks Though in 50th Start on PGA Tour Champions

Tim O’Neal captured the most significant victory of his career by winning the 2024 Dominion Energy Charity Classic on the PGA Tour Champions. Although O’Neal, 52, had previously secured three wins on the PGA Tour Latinoamerica circuit, his last victory came eight years ago, and he never found success on the Korn Ferry or PGA Tours. This win marked his 50th start on the Champions circuit and served as the opening event of the three-leg Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs.

Entering the event ranked 55th in the points standings, O’Neal needed to break into the top 54 to advance to the next round. His timely victory catapulted him well into contention. O’Neal finished with a 13-under total at The Country Club of Virginia, securing a two-shot win over Carlos Gonzalez.

O’Neal began the tournament with a 1-under 71, followed by an impressive 5-under 67 on Saturday. He closed on Sunday with a remarkable 7-under 65, highlighted by a front-nine 32. After a birdie on the 10th, he navigated five consecutive pars before a pivotal birdie on the par-5 16th, despite hitting his tee shot into a bunker. On the par-5 18th, O’Neal repeated his bunker success, making another birdie to finish at 13-under. Gonzalez, needing an eagle on the last hole to force a playoff, came up short.

David Bransdon finished in third at 9 under, while Tim Petrovic took solo fourth at 8 under. Ernie Els, the points leader, finished tied for 20th. O’Neal’s victory moved him from 55th to 13th in the standings, allowing him to advance to the Simmons Bank Championship in Little Rock. Unfortunately, Chris DiMarco, Kirk Triplett, and Angel Cabrera fell out of the top 54, ending their 2024 seasons.

Thailand, a land of rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning natural beauty, is a golfer’s dream destination. With its world-class courses, delectable cuisine, and warm hospitality, this Southeast Asian gem has something to offer every enthusiast.
As a golf course reviewer and roaming reporter for the African American Golfer’s Digest, I was fortunate enough to spend an unforgettable time in Thailand, not only exploring its spectacular golf courses but also indulging in a variety of non-golf related adventures. Join me on this journey as I unveil why Thailand should be your next golfing destination.
A special thanks to the incredible teams at Thailand Golf Travel Mart, GolfAsian, Tourism Authority of Thailand, and SAESHE for their seamless coordination and the unforgettable experiences they made possible.
Planning your golf getaway to Thailand is a breeze is especially if you reach out to the professionals like GolfAsian. The flight time, though a bit lengthy, is well worth it. Choose a comfortable flight class to accommodate being seated for several hours.
Bangkok, the bustling capital, offers a plethora of attractions both on and off the golf course. While the traffic can be a bit hectic, careful planning can make your commute smoother. The city’s golf courses are top-notch, equipped with all the modern amenities you’d expect.
Thailand golf does have some perks that American golfers my find to their liking. These perks are the caddies and “comfort stations.” Caddies in Thailand are typically women and provide a valuable service to golfers. They are not only knowledgeable about the course but also serve as hosts, ensuring that you have a pleasant experience. Caddies often offer advice on club selection, shot placement, and even provide a bit of local insight into the area. They also play a crucial role in keeping you hydrated and comfortable, especially during the hot and humid months. The shade from the umbrellas and fanning is priceless. In Thailand, many golf courses feature convenient “comfort stops” every three to four holes, providing players with the opportunity to grab ice-cold drinks, snacks, or take a break in restrooms that rival the amenities of a luxurious halfway house back home. These thoughtful touches make it much more manageable to enjoy a round in the sweltering heat.
Siam Country Club Bangkok: A Timeless Classic
Siam Country Club Bangkok is a testament to timeless elegance. Designed by Toby Cobb, this hybrid course blends parkland and links elements for a truly unique challenge. The zoysia fairways are generous, but the dwarf Bermuda greens can be tricky. The subtle rolls in the fairways can be tricky to navigate when hitting approach shots to these large green complexes. While the course is still young, the maturing landscape of newly planted saplings promises to add to its visual appeal in the coming years.
The clubhouse is a luxurious haven with a fine dining restaurant, a well-stocked pro shop, and comfortable locker rooms to include showers. While there’s no driving range, hitting nets are available for pre-round warm-ups.
One of the things I really enjoyed about Siam Country Club was the layout. The course is designed for almost any level of golfer. Siam Bangkok’s signature 18th hole is an exceptionally great par 3 to finish a round. The green is encompassed by pothole bunkers, including a pair that name translates to “Big Ass” a named that perfectly describes its shape. Typically, courses do not like to end with a par 3 in this case this was a wonderful choice by the architect. If you’re looking for a world-class golfing experience in Bangkok, Siam Country Club is a must-play. Although a private club, reservations for play can be made by most third parties. I’d highly recommend GolfAsia as your source for booking any golf trip in Asia.
Riverdale Golf Club Bangkok: A Hidden Gem

If you are seeking a slightly more off-the-beaten-path experience, Riverdale Golf Club is a hidden gem. This course, designed by Jonathan Morrow and Al Tikkanen, offers a challenging blend of elevation changes and water hazards. Navigating the undulating Paspalum fairways and strategic bunker placements is just part of the difficulty presented at Riverdale the greens are MiniVerde and have subtle breaks that may not visible to the untrained eye. Trust your caddie.
The clubhouse is comfortable and welcoming, and the practice facilities have everything you need to prepare for your round for most golfers. Riverdale offers excellent value for money and boasts stunning scenery. All holes have a 3-foot painted circle around the pins known as the “gimme circle”. This unique feature was added to help speed up play for the golfers who wish to use it.
A highlight of the course is the island green on the eighth hole, a 100-yard par 3 that demands accuracy and nerves of steel. The course also features two greens on this hole, giving golfers the choice to choose their approach. This course, when played by a golfer from the correct tee box for their skill level, offers some risk and reward opportunity holes which always make for interesting conversations either at the 19th hole or later.
Thailand offers a wealth of experiences beyond the golf course. Explore ancient temples, vibrant markets, and stunning beaches. Indulge in delicious Thai cuisine and immerse yourself in the country’s rich culture. Thailand is a golfer’s paradise, offering a perfect blend of world-class golf, stunning scenery, and unforgettable experiences. From the luxurious Siam Country Club to the hidden gem of Riverdale Golf Club, this Southeast Asian destination has something to offer every enthusiast. Bangkok was a great starting point. Stay tuned as we move to the beautiful ocean city of Hua Hin for part two of this trip.
As you plan your trip, remember the words “Your stories never end.” The experiences you have in Thailand will create lasting memories and stories that you’ll cherish for years to come.
