Meet Larry Gardner, a Powerful New Voice at the Tour Championship

by AAGD Staff

Golf fans watching the 2026 Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club may have found themselves listening just as closely as they were watching. Before the players struck their opening shots at the August 26-30 tournament, a deep, commanding voice introduced them to the crowd—and quickly became one of the most talked-about sounds of the tournament.

That voice belongs to Larry Gardner, a Georgia-based sports announcer whose booming delivery has earned him a growing following well beyond the golf course. Gardner’s introduction of players such as Collin Morikawa attracted widespread attention, with fans and golf personalities praising the energy, cadence and personality he brings to the first tee.

Gardner’s journey to one of golf’s biggest stages is an example of persistence meeting opportunity. His interest in announcing began while he was still in high school. He continued developing his skills at Kennesaw State University before expanding into collegiate athletics, minor league baseball and other sports-related broadcasting opportunities.

His résumé includes announcing work for Georgia Tech Athletics, Kennesaw State, Berry College and Clark Atlanta University, as well as serving as the voice of the Rome Emperors, a High-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. He has worked in several capacities, including public-address announcing, play-by-play, color commentary, podcasting and voice-over work.

The breakthrough that brought Gardner national attention came in 2023, when he auditioned for the Atlanta Braves’ public-address announcer position. More than 500 people reportedly competed for the opportunity. Gardner advanced to the final three and became a fan favorite, receiving significant support during the public voting process. Although he did not ultimately get the job, the audition dramatically increased his visibility and opened new doors.

Gardner has also joked about the transformation of his voice. He has recalled sounding much different as a youngster before eventually developing the extraordinarily deep tone that has become his professional trademark—one that has drawn comparisons to the voices associated with major professional sports arenas.

That distinctive sound of this 6 feet 4 inches, 330 pounder has now found a natural home in golf. The first-tee announcer has an important role: introduce the competitors, build anticipation and help establish the atmosphere before every round. Gardner brings an arena-style enthusiasm to that responsibility, making the player introductions feel like an event in themselves.

His appearance at East Lake also reflects the changing nature of sports entertainment. Golf continues to find new ways to create excitement for spectators, and personalities such as Gardner demonstrate that the experience surrounding a tournament can be almost as memorable as the competition.

Gardner has made no secret of his ambition. While golf has provided a major platform, he has expressed aspirations of eventually working in professional basketball. For now, however, his voice is helping define the atmosphere at some of golf’s most important events.

From a high-school announcer to a viral audition, minor league baseball and collegiate sports, Larry Gardner’s journey illustrates what can happen when talent is combined with preparation, persistence and the courage to keep pursuing a dream.

At East Lake, golf fans discovered something else: sometimes, the voice introducing the stars can become a star in his own right.
