The feature-length comedy, “Why You Suck at Golf: The Movie” was officially released to the public on December 3, 2020 via the online streaming channel, “One Minute Golf”.
The movie began production in November, 2019 and completed at the end of November, 2020. The 77-minute movie stars Jon Borrill as “Bogart” – a character from the book of the same name, “Why You Suck at Golf”.
It all started as two guys setting out to make comedic golf videos. It became a movie. Made during a global pandemic. In 2019, Jon Borrill and Clive Scarff, both of Vancouver Canada, launched an online golf channel called OMG – One Minute Golf. The channel features fun little chat shows hosted by the two, and over 50 golf instruction videos from Scarff’s “Hit Down Dammit!” video series, a supplement to his best-selling golf book of the same name. Scarff has a second best-selling golf book called, “Why You Suck at Golf” and that became the topic of conversation in terms of providing more content for OMG.
The movie was shot entirely in Canada on the Vancouver North Shore featuring the stunning scenery of Bowen Island Golf Club, Horseshoe Bay, Eagle Harbour and Ambleside in West Vancouver.
In the story, Bogart is getting over a bad divorce and throws himself into the game he loves, only to find the course he loves just as much is in jeopardy of closing, at the hands of a golf-hating councilor on the town council. The story also promotes junior golfing and features some young and talented golfers.
“Why You Suck at Golf: The Movie” was written and directed by Clive Scarff, who also wrote the original book. The book has reached #1 on Amazon multiple times, as has another of Scarff’s books, “Hit Down Dammit!”. Scarff is originally from Toronto, Canada, and has a long history in television and literature, as well as 20-plus years’ experience as a golf teaching professional. Jon Borrill – who also serves as a producer on the film – hails from Norfolk, England and while his “day job” was in accounting and property development, he has a long history as an emcee and in live theatre. He is also an avid golfer. “A golf pro writer and a golf-loving accountant, it turns out, are not a bad combination when making a golf movie,” Scarff jokes.
Borrill says, “Clive and I combined our passions to create an online golf channel, comprising short golf segments and over 50 of his instructional videos from his Hit Down Dammit! book. We were exploring the idea of comedic videos connected to “Why You Suck at Golf” and the idea blossomed into a full length movie. The idea was to keep it simple, use modern equipment, and enlist the help of friends and family. And that’s exactly what we did.”
Scarff notes, “Of course then we ran right into Covid. Our first-ever feature length movie and we chose the year of a global pandemic. But it’s funny, for every obstacle the pandemic threw at us, there was an unintentional yet distinct advantage somewhere else. For instance, we couldn’t shoot our one big crowd scene the way we wanted due to health guidelines, but on the flipside, when we got the green light to resume, we suddenly had Bowen Island golf course, empty, two days a week on which to film. It was perfect!”
The movie can be viewed on AmazonPrime in the US and UK and also streamed via our official website www.whyyousuckatgolfmovie.com from anywhere in the world.
