His attorney emphasized that privacy has been “repeatedly compromised,” making it difficult for Woods to fully engage in treatment if he remained stateside. 

The decision comes in the aftermath of a high-profile crash near his home in Florida, where authorities reported signs of impairment, though no alcohol was detected in his system. Woods later pleaded not guilty to charges that include DUI and refusal to submit to a urine test.

Women on Par was nominated by Maulana Dotch, the second-ever African-American woman to become a Professional Golf Association of America (PGA) member and the first African-American woman PGA member to serve as a general manager of a golf facility, Houston’s Hermann Park Golf Course. Dotch’s nomination was for Women on Par’s volunteer commitment to junior golfers and its role in expanding the sport to women of color. Tiger Woods is once again at the center of public concern following a recent DUI-related incident in Florida, bringing renewed attention to a past that includes struggles with prescription medications and a highly publicized 2017 arrest.

According to recent reports, Woods was involved in a rollover crash near his home in Jupiter and was later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. Authorities stated that while a breathalyzer test showed no alcohol in his system, Woods appeared impaired and refused to submit to a urine test. He was held for approximately eight hours before being released, and the incident is now under investigation. 

This latest episode echoes a similar and more revealing case from 2017, when Woods was arrested under very different but equally troubling circumstances. In the early morning hours of May 29, 2017, police found him asleep behind the wheel of his vehicle, which was stopped in a traffic lane with the engine running. 

At the time, Woods insisted alcohol was not involved, and that proved to be true. A breathalyzer test showed a blood alcohol level of 0.00. However, a toxicology report later revealed a dangerous mix of prescription drugs in his system. 

Those substances included powerful painkillers and sedatives: Vicodin and Dilaudid (both opioids), Xanax (used for anxiety), Ambien (a sleep aid), and THC, the active ingredient in marijuana.  The combination of these medications can impair coordination, slow reaction time, and cause confusion—factors that likely contributed to his condition when police encountered him.

Woods later acknowledged that he had been attempting to manage severe back pain and insomnia following multiple surgeries, but admitted he underestimated how the medications would interact. He ultimately pleaded guilty to reckless driving, entered a diversion program, and completed rehabilitation as part of his sentence. 

The 2017 arrest marked a turning point in how Woods’ personal struggles were viewed. Rather than illegal drug abuse, the situation was widely understood as a misuse or dangerous combination of prescribed medications—an issue not uncommon among athletes dealing with chronic pain.

Fast forward to today, and the similarities are difficult to ignore. While there is no confirmed evidence yet of what substances, if any, were involved in the latest crash, officials again suspect impairment despite the absence of alcohol. 

Woods’ career has long been defined by resilience. A 15-time major champion, he has battled through injuries, surgeries, and personal setbacks to remain one of the most influential figures in golf. Yet incidents like these highlight the ongoing challenges he faces away from the course.

“It is incredible that a Black man had a vision to build a golf course and then to follow through with that vision in 1946,” said Renee Powell. “It is so amazing because he had just returned home from WWII  and as a Black soldier was denied the GI Bill because they were only for white soldiers yet he built a golf course for everyone.” 

Clearview Golf Club is widely recognized as the first golf course in America that was designed, built, owned, and operated by an African American. Powell, a World War II veteran, created the course in 1946 after facing racial discrimination that prevented him from playing at other facilities. Determined to build a place where all people could enjoy the game, he transformed farmland into a golf course by hand, opening Clearview to the public in 1948. 

Over the decades, Clearview has become known as “America’s Course,” a symbol of equality and access in a sport that historically excluded people of color. The course was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001, further cementing its importance not only to golf but to American history. 

Today, that legacy is carried forward by Renee Powell, who serves as the head golf professional at Clearview and her brother Larry who serves a Course Superintendent.

The daughter of Bill Powell, Renee learned the game on the very course her father built and went on to become the second Black woman to compete on the LPGA Tour. Her career has spanned decades, and she is widely respected as both a trailblazer and one of the game’s most influential ambassadors. 

In addition to her playing career, Powell has dedicated her life to growing the game and promoting inclusion. She has been deeply involved in youth development programs, international outreach, and initiatives aimed at making golf more accessible to underrepresented communities. Under her leadership, Clearview has evolved into more than a golf course—it is a living educational space and community hub.

The Pioneer Golf Tournament reflects that mission. More than just a competitive event, it serves as a celebration of history, culture, and progress in the game. Participants not only compete on a storied course but also engage with the rich heritage that continues to shape its identity.
